Reviews Summary

Mamure Castle is widely praised as a remarkably well-preserved and historically significant medieval fortress offering stunning coastal views. Visitors appreciate its affordability and the serene, uncrowded atmosphere. However, a significant concern is the lack of safety features like handrails on its walls and stairs, requiring extreme caution. Reddit+1

"Big castle, well worth the visit and a 15 minute walk around.
No museum which is a shame. No cafe.
But more importantly No handrails so if you venture up the stone steps the walkway on the walls be carful and don't fall off the wall - seems to be a work in progress and safety isn't primary here.
Hardly anyone there on the day I visited, I had the whole castle to myself.
150tl / 3 euro when I visited, pay the guy in the cabin near the entrance."

"Mamure Castle is one of Turkey’s most remarkable medieval fortifications, located near the town of Anamur in the Mersin Province.

The castle sits impressively on the Mediterranean coast, surrounded by palm trees and the sound of waves crashing against nearby rocks. Its silhouette dominates the landscape, offering panoramic views of both the azure sea and the lush countryside.

Dating back to Roman times, the castle has undergone several renovations and expansions throughout the centuries, most notably by the Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. This layered history is evident in its architecture.

Visitors can notice a fascinating blend of Roman foundations, Byzantine walls, and Seljuk battlements. Spread across approximately 23,500 square meters, Mamure Castle features thirty-nine towers, thick defensive walls, and a moat that, at one point, served as protection against invaders.

Walking through the castle grounds, the sense of stepping back in time is palpable. The inner courtyard is vast, often dotted with wildflowers, and contains remnants of old cisterns and baths, suggesting how self-sufficient the fortress once was.

The outer ramparts and watchtowers offer breathtaking vantage points for photography and contemplation, and it’s easy to imagine sentries keeping watch over the coastline centuries ago.

The castle’s preservation allows visitors to climb its sturdy staircases and peer out from arrow slits. Some areas, especially near the sea-facing walls, are rugged and weather-worn, showing the relentless effects of time and nature. Yet, overall, Mamure Castle impresses with its robust structure and historical ambiance.

There is a small mosque within the castle’s boundaries, believed to have been built during the Ottoman period, serving as further evidence of the site’s continuous use and importance.

Being in a remote location it is less crowded than many of Turkey’s other tourist destinations. The serenity of the castle, combined with the beauty of the surrounding landscape, makes it an ideal spot for those seeking tranquility as well as history. The drive from Anamur to Mamure Castle is scenic, passing through charming villages and coastal roads, enhancing the experience for visitors.

Mamure Castle is a testament to Turkey’s rich and diverse history, offering an immersive journey through the echoes of ancient empires, stunning views, and a chance to explore one of the best-preserved castles on the Mediterranean coast. The experience is rewarding for history enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone looking to connect with the past amidst natural beauty."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Fortress Through the Ages

Mamure Castle is a remarkable testament to centuries of strategic importance and architectural evolution. Its foundations trace back to the Roman era, with evidence of a fourth-century Roman castle. This ancient base was significantly expanded and fortified by the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia in the 12th century, primarily to defend against pirate raids. Later, during the Byzantine era and the Crusades, further repairs and modifications were made, reflecting its continuous strategic value. Instagram+1

The most substantial transformations occurred in the 13th century when Alaattin Keykubat I of the Seljuk Turks captured the ruins in 1221. He oversaw the construction of a larger, more formidable castle, incorporating elements of the earlier structures. The castle's impressive 39 towers and robust walls are largely a product of this Seljuk period. Even after the Seljuk era, during the Karamanoğlu Beyliği period (between 1300 and 1308), further additions and reinforcements were made, solidifying its defensive capabilities. Instagram+1

Today, Mamure Castle stands as a fascinating blend of these historical layers. Visitors can observe the distinct architectural styles and imagine the lives of the soldiers and inhabitants who defended these walls through various empires and conflicts. Its location on the Mediterranean coast made it a crucial stronghold for controlling maritime trade and defending against naval threats, a role it fulfilled for centuries. Reddit

Exploring Mamure Castle: What to Expect

Mamure Castle is a sprawling complex, covering approximately 23,500 square meters, making it one of Turkey's largest medieval castles. The most striking feature is its moat, which once provided a significant defensive barrier. Inside, you'll find a vast inner courtyard, often adorned with wildflowers, hinting at the self-sufficiency of the fortress with remnants of old cisterns and baths. Reddit

The defensive walls are extensive, punctuated by 39 towers, each offering a unique perspective. Climbing these walls and towers is a highlight, providing breathtaking vantage points for photography and a sense of historical immersion. However, it's crucial to note the lack of modern safety features like handrails on many of the stone staircases and walkways. Visitors are strongly advised to wear sturdy, non-slip shoes and proceed with extreme caution. InstagramReddit

Within the castle grounds, you'll also find a small mosque, believed to date from the Ottoman period, further illustrating the site's continuous use. While there's no museum or cafe on-site, the sheer scale and historical ambiance of Mamure Castle offer a rewarding experience for history enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking a glimpse into the past amidst stunning natural beauty.
