What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Koz Castle to be a historically significant site with a beautiful natural setting, offering a free entry and a chance for peaceful exploration. However, many note its dilapidated state and the urgent need for restoration, with some expressing disappointment over the lack of ongoing archaeological work and basic amenities like trash bins.
"Why is there no excavation work around it? Why hasn't there been any effort to bring more history to light? Why isn't there even a sign for information?
The surroundings are incredibly beautiful, lush green, and surrounded by complete nature. It has been damaged a lot, and restoration is needed, I don't know if it will be done. When you go, take a garbage bag and gloves with you so that you can collect the remains left behind by the two-legged creatures. Because they were the worst and ugliest sight around. We collected them. I hope those who come will have the same sensitivity. There are no garbage containers or boxes around. But throwing garbage in this place shouldn't mean leaving it there."

"The trump castle is in a magnificent location. Entry is free. Unfortunately, it needs restoration, but it's still a wonderful place to visit."

"Koz Castle, also known as Kuseyr or Kürşat Castle, is located within the Altınözü district of Hatay province. It is believed that the first settlement on this hill existed during the Hellenistic period. The castle was built after the Muslim conquest of the city in the 7th century, and its primary use as a strategic fortification occurred during the Crusader Principality of Antioch, which existed in the region between the 11th and 13th centuries. Known as the castle conquered by Mamluk Sultan Baybars in 1268, just one step before Antioch during his reconquest of the region, Koz Castle lost its strategic importance after these conquests, ending two centuries of chaotic conditions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, the Kozkalesi neighborhood is located 1-2 km away. While plans were underway before the earthquake to uncover the settled life at the castle through excavations, the castle itself, especially the bastions, were severely damaged in the earthquake. I have not yet (03/2024) seen any excavation or restoration preparations. At least a rescue effort for the bastions must be carried out before it is too late."
