What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge as an engineering marvel with breathtaking views, calling it an amazing and unforgettable experience. However, many caution that the hike to reach it is significantly steep and challenging, requiring good physical fitness and proper gear. Some found the descent even more difficult than the climb.
"Hiked this the usual way ie anti clockwise loop going up from Randa village. I consider myself a regular gym goer & occasional hiker albeit in my mid 50s now & I thought this ascent was pretty tough & I saw people younger than me struggling with it. Thankfully if you are doing this on a hot day as we did, a lot of the way up is in tree shade. Of course this means wider views of the area are obscured, pretty much all the way up to the bridge. I’m not brilliant with heights but I managed to focus & plod across. The way down on the other side is quite possibly even steeper over a less defined & more boulder strewn path. I would advise anybody contemplating this route to take hiking sticks with them, your knees will thank you for it."

"One of the most amazing experiences you can have. Starting from Randa train station, in an anti-clockwise direction you will begin to climb towards the suspension bridge. The trail goes up through a lush green landscape, in the summer, and you will cross paths with other travelers. It will take about two hours and a half, but is worth it, because when you reach the top you will be speechless to describe what you can see. After crossing the bridge you begin to descend to the starting point. Will be about one hour a half trough trees, boulders and more astonishing views. I recommend this trail in the late spring and summer and take enough water with you because there nor points to refuel your bottles."

The Hike: A True Test of Endurance
The anti-clockwise loop from Randa is a popular choice, offering a demanding but rewarding trek. The path can be narrow and strewn with stones, requiring careful footing. Despite the physical exertion, the payoff is immense. The trail winds through lush green landscapes, and the anticipation builds with every step towards one of Switzerland's most impressive feats of engineering.
For those who enjoy a physical challenge and are rewarded with spectacular views, this hike is highly recommended. It's crucial to be well-prepared with adequate water and appropriate gear to fully enjoy the experience.
Crossing the Bridge: An Unforgettable Experience
While the bridge is designed for safety and security, those with a significant fear of heights may find the experience daunting. The walk across typically takes between 5 to 10 minutes, offering ample time to soak in the panoramic vistas of the Valais Alps.
On the other side, you'll find picnic spots and a toilet facility. For those seeking even more spectacular views, a further 30-minute hike uphill leads to a restaurant with a nice panoramic outlook.
