What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently describe the Mürren-Gimmelwald Via Ferrata as an unforgettable, thrilling, and breathtaking adventure. The stunning views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the unique cliffside path are major highlights. While some find it scary due to the heights, most agree it's a well-made and rewarding experience, especially when tackled at your own pace.
"This was our very first via ferrata and it was absolutely unforgettable! The route is really fun and varied, with lots of different sections to enjoy. We picked it for a day trip and were more than satisfied. Since we’re beginners it took us about three hours, moving slowly and just soaking up the beautiful nature.
There were some of experienced climbers who rushed past like it was a workout, but we took our time and loved every minute. The views are stunning, and there are lots of safe spots to stop for photos.
We rented our gear in town, which was cheaper than at the Intersport near the trail. Did it in sneakers, without gloves, and had no issues at all. It was a hot day (26°C) with parts of the trail in the sun and others in the shade. Make sure to bring enough water and just enjoy the adventure!"

"Where do I even begin….
So, I agreed to do this when the guys at the hostel I was staying at asked me to come with them. I was solo travelling Switzerland. I had no previous experience ever rock climbing before. But I knew, I really wanted to do it to challenge myself. This was without a doubt my most favourite thing I’ve ever done while in my 20’s. What an incredible experience that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
The feeling I got hanging off the side of that mountain 2000ft up in the air was a feeling like no other. I was so nervous but I have never felt more alive and free! The ending with the shaky suspension bridge was the scariest part of all of it. No tour guides, just vibes plus the hostel boys I met encouraging and helping me get to the finish line.
They say the best adventures of your life happen when you step out of your comfort zone. I’m sure glad I stepped out of my shell. This Via Ferrata proved that and more!
The views, and vibes were incredible. Something I’ll always be proud to look back on when I’m old. 100% recommend this to all the adventure seekers out there."

"Loved this Via Ferrata! It was our first (but we are experienced hikers) — definitely do not need a guide. You can rent your gear from a local shop in Murren, we stayed at a hotel in Murren so it was a 5 min walk to the shop. We rented the gear (recommend if you don’t have the space to pack for hiking gear). It was the most beautiful day and only a few people on the trail. I recommend going early, they open at 9 AM. I believe they stop renting gear at 2-3 PM, so plan ahead. Only a few couples ahead of us and let us pass no problem. The benefits of going alone without tour guide are going at your own pace and taking photos etc. we didn’t have to wait in line at all on the trail. Three sections made my legs shake and heart race. You’re HIGH UP. Don’t drop your phone. Highly recommend!!"

The Thrill of the Via Ferrata

This unique direction means you're constantly descending along the cliff face, which some find less intimidating than ascending, though the exposure is still significant. The trail features various elements, including metal rungs, ladders, and a famous suspension bridge that tests your nerve.
While it's a challenging and exhilarating experience, it's crucial to be prepared. Proper gear, a good level of fitness, and a healthy respect for heights are essential. Many visitors rent equipment in Mürren, making it accessible even if you're not a seasoned climber.

Safety and Gear Essentials
While some may attempt the route in sneakers, sturdy hiking boots offer better grip and ankle support, which can be beneficial on the varied terrain. Gloves are optional but can help prevent blisters and improve grip on the metal components. It's also vital to check the weather forecast before setting out, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
Many travelers opt to rent their gear from local sports shops in Mürren. This is often more cost-effective than purchasing your own if you're not a frequent via ferrata user. Shops like Intersport are commonly mentioned for gear rental.
