Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Bisse de Clavau for its magnificent panoramic views of Sion, its castles, and the surrounding vineyards. The easy nature of the hike makes it accessible, though some note that certain sections require a good sense of balance. Many recommend visiting in good weather to fully appreciate the scenery, with autumn offering the added charm of grape harvests.

"We really enjoyed to take a walk on the trail. Especially in end of September , you can see some different types of the grape on the tree or harvested."

Sana Chen

"The day before yesterday, as the weather was not too bad, and I had often heard about the Bisse de Clavau and had been assured that it was a walk within my reach (through the vineyards), I went there by post bus to Grimisuat.
After a good few minutes of walking, I arrived there. I hadn't been lied to. The panorama is magnificent, even if, that day, there was a little lack of sun.
If you want to make the return trip the right way (direction Sion) in less than an hour, it's best not to have vertigo or balance problems. If so, go the other way, even if it takes twice as long. That's what I had to do.
However, despite everything, I would really like to go back there, next spring why not?
Go for it ! In good weather, it's splendid, you won't regret the trip."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Bisse de Clavau: An Irrigation Marvel

The Bisse de Clavau is a historic irrigation channel, or 'bisse,' that has been crucial for agriculture in the Valais region for centuries. These ancient water channels were ingeniously engineered to bring water from mountain streams down to the arid vineyards and fields. Walking along the Bisse de Clavau offers a unique perspective on this traditional water management system and its impact on the landscape. The trail itself often follows the path of the bisse, providing a gentle gradient and often shaded sections, making it a pleasant walk. Reddit

These bisses are not just functional; they are also integral to the cultural heritage of the region. Many have been preserved and transformed into scenic walking paths, allowing visitors to experience the history and beauty of the Valais countryside. The Bisse de Clavau, in particular, is celebrated for the stunning views it offers over the town of Sion and the surrounding vineyards. It’s a testament to the ingenuity of past generations and a vital part of the local ecosystem. Reddit

When you walk the Bisse de Clavau, you're not just enjoying a hike; you're stepping back in time and appreciating the symbiotic relationship between water, land, and people. Navigating the Bisse de Clavau Trail

The Bisse de Clavau trail is renowned for its accessibility and the rewarding vistas it provides. While generally considered an easy walk, there are nuances to consider for the most enjoyable experience. One key piece of advice from travelers is to be mindful of the direction you choose for your return journey. The path leading back towards Sion is described as potentially challenging for those with vertigo or balance issues, suggesting it might be best avoided if you're prone to such concerns. Reddit

Conversely, taking the path in the opposite direction, away from Sion, is recommended as a more comfortable option, even if it doubles the walking time. This allows for a more relaxed exploration of the scenery without the added stress of steep or exposed sections. Regardless of your chosen route, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as the terrain can be uneven in places. Reddit
