What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Torneträsk for its breathtaking natural beauty, especially the mesmerizing Northern Lights and serene summer landscapes. The unique winter experience, including ice fishing, is a major draw. While the journey can be long, many find it well worth the effort for the unforgettable Arctic adventure. Some note the extreme cold and potential road challenges in winter.
"Saw the lake from my room in STF and from near the sky station. I wanted to go near, but couldn't because in winter the road is not maintained properly and is quite dangerous. I was traveling alone so this was the only safest option for me. Even from that far, it looked majestic. Would love to see it in summer, if I am able to visit there again."

"Beautiful location. It was great to watch the Northern Lights here. We stayed at the nearby hostel. We had the most amazing view of lake directly from our bedroom window. Which also allowed us to watch the Northern Lights from bed. It's beautiful space for taking photos or cross country skiing. I recommend you bring your family. And I hope to return in the spring and summer. The train station is very very very close. It's well worth the long travel and train ride to get here. Take a chance and experience something amazing. We brought our children and had a fantastic time. Visit the naturum nearby. Enjoy the wildlife and even the cold. It was negative 30 degrees Celsius when we were there but we still had an amazing time."

"Beautiful place to visit, if you come in the winter then you can take a trip out on the ice and fish, in the summer it's the most amazing place to sit and have a break or eat lunch!"

Experiencing the Aurora Borealis
To maximize your chances, plan your visit between September and March. Clear, dark nights are essential. While the lights can appear anytime, evenings are generally considered the best. Many travelers recommend checking aurora forecasts and being patient, as the display can be unpredictable but incredibly rewarding.
Pro Tip: Dress in multiple warm layers, including thermal underwear, fleece, and a windproof outer shell. Bring hand warmers and a thermos with a hot drink to stay comfortable while waiting for the lights to appear.
Seasonal Transformations: Winter vs. Summer
Conversely, summer brings a vibrant change. The ice melts, revealing the vast expanse of the lake for boating and other water activities. The surrounding nature awakens, offering a serene environment for relaxation, picnics, and enjoying the long daylight hours. Many visitors express a desire to return to see the lake's transformation.
Consider: If you're seeking the thrill of the Northern Lights and winter sports, plan for a winter visit. If you prefer milder weather, boating, and a more tranquil lakeside experience, summer is your ideal time.
