What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Royal Swedish Opera for its stunning 19th-century architecture and the high quality of its opera and ballet performances. The opulent interior and comfortable seating are frequently highlighted as positives. However, some guests have noted issues with limited visibility from certain seats and a need for modernization in facilities like the bar and cloakroom.
"Kulturfestivalen open air for free tonight! It was so great to hear top opera singers collaborated with the Swedish orchestra to play the top classic! So happy to be able to watch it for free with such top class quality performances."
Joyce L
"A luxurious room, and comfortable seating. There was a ballet apparently, Romeo and Juliet. The orchestra did a great job, the music was very enjoyable.
On the stage, well it's best described as a lot of people milling around at the edge of the stage. They walked, ran off, even skipped out of sight and often came back out of breath. I'm not sure what they were doing on the rest of the stage, but I'm sure it must have been ballet.
In short, these seats are not fit for sale for a visual performance. Be careful booking here.
The bar, cloakroom and toilet facilities are also due for modernisation. They're not sufficient to the numbers of people squeezed in. Something went wrong with the booking as well, we were charged 6 coats overall (2 were needed.) So also be careful what you book in advance, it's not necessary, there's no advantage."
Andrew Jones
"I was wondering when I would come here again, so I booked and watched the performance here. The inside was narrower than I thought. Therefore, anyone sitting in a side seat at least a little bit would not have seen the stage. I watched the Giselle performance here, and I don't know if you will perform Giselle here again, but I hope you don't sit on the left side if you do. I don't recommend that seat because the main character mainly performs on the left. My neck and shoulders hurt because I sat there. But it is a beautiful space if you look at it as a place! It would be better if you look up the explanation of this building on the Internet as a building with a long history."

A Glimpse into the Royal Swedish Opera's History
Over the decades, the Royal Swedish Opera has hosted countless legendary performances and nurtured generations of Swedish and international artists. It has been a cornerstone of Sweden's cultural landscape, presenting a diverse repertoire that ranges from classic operas and ballets to contemporary works. The institution plays a vital role in preserving and advancing the performing arts in Sweden, making it a significant cultural landmark.
Visitors can explore the building's history through guided tours or by simply admiring its architectural splendor. The Sessionssalen (Session Hall) within the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, though not part of the opera house itself, is where Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics are awarded, highlighting the area's connection to prestigious Swedish institutions.
Navigating Seating and Visibility
It's highly recommended to consult the seating chart on the opera's website before purchasing tickets. Look for seats in the central sections of the stalls or the lower balconies for the most unobstructed views. If you're on a budget, last-minute tickets can be a great option, but be mindful of their location. Some Redditors suggest that even side seats can be acceptable if the performance is engaging enough, but it's a gamble.
For those concerned about visibility, consider attending a performance where the staging is more central or where the focus is on the music rather than intricate stage movement. Always check reviews or ask for advice if you're unsure about a specific seat's view.
Experiencing Opera in a Foreign Language
However, it's important to note that surtitles are not always available in English. Some productions might only offer Swedish surtitles. To make the most of your experience, it's highly recommended to read the libretto (the text of the opera) in advance. This will give you a thorough understanding of the plot, characters, and themes, allowing you to follow the story even if the surtitles are limited.
Listening to a recording of the opera beforehand, perhaps with English subtitles or a translated libretto, can also be incredibly helpful. This familiarizes you with the music and key moments, making it easier to appreciate the live performance. Embrace the experience, and even without full comprehension, the power of the music and the visual spectacle can be deeply moving.
