Reviews Summary
Kivik Museum is praised as a 'bijou' and 'fascinating' archive, offering a deep dive into local history. While appreciated for its rich collections and historical significance, some visitors note that its 'Children's Museum' designation might be misleading, as it lacks specific entertainment for younger kids. It's a valuable stop for history buffs and researchers.

"Certainly a very nice and important archive. However, they also market themselves as a "Children's Museum" without offering any kind of reasonable children's entertainment."

"Is a local history museum for Kivik and the surrounding area, that is, Kivik, Vitemölla, Ravlunda, Vitaby and Södra Mellby. The museum is located in the northern part of Simrishamn municipality and is one of Österlen's oldest and largest local history museums. Kivik Museum was founded in the late 19th century by the son of the village, Ola Cappelin. For many years, the collections were scattered in various places in Kivik, including at Kivik's old school and at Ola Cappelin's home. When he died in 1948, he bequeathed 2,000 kronor to the museum's continuation, and the Kivik Local History and Museum Association saw the light of day. However, the association did not become that old, and already in 1955 it was decided that the collections would be moved to the then newly built new school in Kivik, which is still in use. The museum has been located in the basement of Kivik's school since 1955, a stone's throw from Kivik's grave. The collections at Kivik's Museum contain over 4,000 objects from Kivik and the surrounding area. Objects and exhibitions depict life in a typical village in Österlen from the Stone Age to the present day, with an emphasis on the period around 1750–1950. The exhibition area is around 150 square meters. The museum also has a large archive that is open for research. The archive consists of a number of unique documents, maps and thousands of photographs from associations, companies, private individuals and the former Kivik municipality. New documents are still being received by the archive, and the museum accepts new objects as space permits. The museum's board includes historical, archaeological, museum and archival expertise, who work with research, provenance and accessibility of the museum's collections. The main exhibitions have four themes: fishing and shipping, agriculture and crafts, emergency preparedness and fire protection, and school."
