"Gunilla Bell in Uppsala is a hidden gem with so much history! Located on top of Uppsala Castle, the bell dates back to the late 16th century and offers incredible views of the city. The area around the castle is beautiful to explore, and it’s a peaceful spot to reflect on Uppsala’s past. A must-visit for history lovers and anyone who enjoys stunning city views!"

Kaveri Chaudhari

"A historic bell that has some interesting history behind it. The bell was cast in 1588 by order of wife of King Johan III Gunilla Belke, as there is a corresponding inscription on its rim. The bell was intended for the chimes of the castle Church, and for more than a hundred years it struck the time on the South-Eastern tower of the castle. In 1702, a significant part of the castle was destroyed by fire and a belfry was built for the bell on the Stirbiscop Bastion. The bell rang early in the morning, announcing the start of a new day, and in the evening, after which the residents had to extinguish the fires and close the shutters on the windows."

The Story of the Gunilla Bell

The Gunilla Bell, or Gunillaklockan, is more than just a bell; it's a survivor. Cast in 1588 by order of Gunilla Bielke, wife of King Johan III, it was originally meant for the chimes of Uppsala Castle's church. For over a century, it faithfully marked the hours from the castle's South-Eastern tower. Its resilience is most famously demonstrated by its survival of the devastating 1702 castle fire, an event that destroyed a significant portion of the structure. Reddit

Following the fire, a new belfry was constructed for the bell on the Stirbiscop Bastion. It continued its duty, ringing in the early mornings and evenings, serving as a daily rhythm for the castle's inhabitants. This historical significance makes it a poignant reminder of Uppsala's past and the castle's enduring legacy. Reddit

Visitors can still see the bell today, often displayed in the castle courtyard. The inscription on its rim serves as a direct link to its royal origins. It's a quiet spot to contemplate the passage of time and the historical events that have shaped Uppsala. Reddit
