We often stop here when we do a circumnavigation of Svalbard. In August we encountered a mother polar bear and her cubs resting on the shore. There are some interesting hikes and historical remains in the fjord. It is a highly recommended place to visit on your trip to Svalbard.
During the summer this area is only accessible by expedition cruise. There are no day trips here. We always recommended joining a small ship expedition with 12 guests to visit this area."

Navigating the Arctic Waters: Expedition Cruising
When choosing an expedition, look for itineraries that specifically mention Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve or Hornsund Fjord. The summer months, from June to August, are generally considered the best time for these voyages, as the ice conditions are more favorable, and wildlife is more active. Be prepared for a range of weather conditions, even during summer, and pack accordingly with warm, waterproof, and windproof layers. The experience is about embracing the wild, so flexibility is key, as itineraries can change based on ice and weather.
Wildlife Encounters: Respect and Safety
Beyond polar bears, keep an eye out for seals basking on ice floes or shorelines, and a vast array of seabirds nesting on cliffs or soaring overhead. The waters around Hornsund Fjord may also offer opportunities to spot whales. The key to a rewarding wildlife experience is patience, quiet observation, and trusting your guides. The thrill of spotting a polar bear family or a colony of birds is amplified by the knowledge that you are observing them responsibly in their pristine environment.
Capturing the Arctic Majesty: Photography Tips
Remember that Arctic conditions can be harsh on camera equipment. Extreme cold can drain batteries rapidly, so carry spare batteries and keep them warm in an inside pocket. Moisture can also be an issue, so use a waterproof camera bag and consider lens cloths for condensation. The unique Arctic light, especially during the long summer days, can create magical moments. Be prepared for varying light conditions and embrace the challenge of capturing the ethereal beauty of this remote wilderness.
