Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awestruck by the dramatic beauty of St. George's Monastery, its precarious cliffside location, and the adventurous hike through Wadi Qelt. The sense of history and spiritual tranquility is palpable. However, some find the hike challenging, and the limited facilities require thorough preparation.

"If you pass by, be sure to stop and go to the observation deck. Stunning view of the gorge and the Greek orthodox church. You can see, how much effort the monks put in to make such beauty. I liked it, and not only the church itself, well, if you look at the rock a little higher, you will see two small balconies on the rock- the monks here made small, but very cozy houses for themselves with amazing views. We stayed here for 15 minutes, but every minute I enjoyed the amazing view of this church and this gorge."

"Could not enter because it closes already at 1 pm. Nice view of it from the viewpoint next to the access road. Great setting in a deep narrow gorge. 40 min walk from the nearby refugee camp on a steep paved road, there also seems to be a path on the other side of the gorge."

"Our tour guide surprised us with a visit here but we saw it from a distance. But it was one of the most remarkable sites I've ever seen. Built out of the rock in the mountains it's an actually working monastery. Amazing"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Significance of St. George's Monastery

Nestled dramatically within the rugged cliffs of Wadi Qelt, St. George's Monastery is a testament to centuries of devotion and resilience. Founded in the 5th century, it has been rebuilt and inhabited by Orthodox monks throughout history, enduring invasions and natural challenges. The monastery's precarious location was chosen for its isolation and spiritual significance, offering a sanctuary for prayer and contemplation.

Its architecture is a marvel, with cells and chapels carved directly into the rock face, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. The monastery is part of the rich religious tapestry of the Judean Desert, a region dotted with ancient hermitages and spiritual sites. Visitors often feel a profound sense of history and peace when exploring its sacred spaces. Reddit

Community Insight: Many visitors are struck by the sheer audacity of building such a structure in such a remote and challenging environment. The stories of the monks who have lived here for generations add a layer of human connection to the ancient stones. Reddit

Hiking Wadi Qelt: What to Expect

Be prepared for the desert climate. Even in cooler months, the sun can be intense. Carrying plenty of water is crucial, as there are no facilities along the trail. The return hike, uphill, will be more strenuous and will likely take longer than the descent. Consider the time of day to avoid the peak heat, especially during summer months. Reddit
