Reviews Summary

Polonnaruwa Ancient City is a highly praised historical landmark, lauded for its well-preserved ruins, impressive architecture, and significant cultural heritage. Visitors often recommend renting bicycles for exploration and suggest hiring a local guide to fully appreciate the site's historical depth. The main drawbacks mentioned are the steep entry fee and the intense heat during midday.

"Ancient city with multiple sites. Being ancient capital, it captures quite a history of Sri Lanka.
If weather is favorable, it would be good to pick bicycle on rent to explore the place. Cars can still help to cover the place. There are some small snack shops in the ancient city for quick bite."

"Thoroughly enjoyed out tour through the ancient city. I would typically read my way through independently or use Google for info, but we decided to hire a local guide who was well worth it. Jayalath was very knowledgeable and gave us far more information than we would have thought to search for. There are many guides outside the ticket area but Jayalath was waiting at the first ruins area and gave us a much better rate. I would highly recommend finding Jayalath if you can and make the most of your trip through the ancient ruins."

Tracy Tuning

"Great archaeological site.Contrary to popular reviews you can easily walk the whole way but it's surely faster with a bike. Make sure to bring enough water and sun protection because it gets very hot there.

If you got some time to spare and don't mind the steep entry fee (30$ per person as of August 2025) I'd always recommend visiting.

Tickets available at the museum and payable with credit card."
