What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Wasgamuwa National Park for its abundant elephant sightings and peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere, offering a serene wildlife experience. While other animals are less visible, the opportunity to see large elephant herds up close and enjoy the tranquility makes it a highly recommended, affordable destination.
"We had one of the most amazing experiences. We did several national parks in Sri Lanka and this was one of our favourite. The first two hours it was bird watching cuz the elephants were hiding but then, it was a full show and it was amazing 🥹🥹 we were alone, no other jeeps and it was special."

"Was a nice get-away.
So much elephants but other animals are not much visible. Maybe due to the higher area of forest and small amount of open areas."
Anushka Muthusinghe
"Did a evening tour and was super.
You will see a huge number of Elephants in close proximity(almost more than Minneriya national park).
Safari jeeps varies over type and model but generally super cheap around 10K SLR plus the park entry tickets.Evening tours are recommended. You can either get a jeep from gate or from your hotel.
Definitely less traffic than the main national parks such as Yala and wilpatthu."

The Elephant Capital: Wasgamuwa's Gentle Giants
When planning your visit, the period between noon and evening is consistently highlighted as the optimal time for elephant sightings. This is when elephants are often seen gathering at water sources or grazing. However, the sheer size and power of these animals mean that safety is paramount. Travelers strongly advise using an experienced safari driver who understands elephant behavior and can navigate potentially tense situations safely. This expertise ensures a more enjoyable and secure wildlife encounter.
An Underrated Gem: Peace and Affordability
Furthermore, Wasgamuwa is often cited as being very affordable, particularly for groups. This makes it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers or families looking to experience a national park without a hefty price tag. The combination of stunning landscapes, abundant birdlife, and the chance to see large elephant herds at a lower cost makes Wasgamuwa a highly recommended, albeit underrated, destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Habitat Restoration and Conservation Efforts
These conservation activities are crucial for the long-term health of the park's ecosystem. By managing invasive species and preserving water sources, these projects help create a more sustainable environment for the park's diverse wildlife, including its famous elephant population. Visitors can appreciate that their visit contributes, in a small way, to supporting these vital conservation efforts.
