"We had a great experience with our tea factory tour that we booked super spontaneous only one hour in advance. Our fantastic driver and guide Ranjith didn’t only take us to beautiful places but is also the best photographer to capture these moments on camera if you wish. The results are some of the most beautiful pictures of us as a couple that we took during this vacation.
The tour at the British tea factory was short and contained all the information that we needed, so that we feel well informed about the production of tea without spending hours.
We also took a trip to a nearby waterfall that was very impressive!
We would highly recommend booking this tour!"

The Art of Ceylon Tea Production
The plucked leaves then undergo a series of transformations within the tea factory. This includes withering, where leaves lose moisture; rolling, which breaks down cell walls to initiate oxidation; oxidation (or fermentation), where leaves develop their characteristic color and aroma; firing, to halt oxidation and reduce moisture content; and finally, sorting and grading based on leaf size and quality. Many estates offer guided tours that walk you through each of these stages, providing an educational and engaging experience.
Experiencing a tea tasting session is a highlight for many visitors. Here, you can sample different varieties of Ceylon tea, learning to discern their unique notes, from the floral hints of a high-grown black tea to the subtle sweetness of a green tea. This immersive experience connects you directly to the rich heritage and agricultural prowess of Sri Lanka's hill country.
The Role of Tea Pickers
While social media often captures the aesthetic of tea picking, it's important to recognize the physical demands of the job. Visitors can gain a deeper appreciation by observing the process and understanding the skill involved. Some tours may even offer a chance to try plucking, providing a hands-on, albeit brief, experience of this demanding work.
Respecting the privacy and dignity of the tea pickers is paramount. While they are accustomed to visitors, always ask for permission before taking close-up photographs and consider supporting them by purchasing tea or local crafts if available.
