What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the conservation efforts and the unique opportunity to see and interact with sea turtles, especially during baby releases. However, some feel the entrance fee is high for the relatively short duration of the visit, particularly for locals.
"They are protecting sea turtles, commonly 5 types of turtles found in Sri Lanka in which 3 are rare. They only put the injured ones here permanently. They rescue them and release them 25kms in the sea from the beach. They also purchase eggs from fishermen and hatch them. Keep them there not more than 3 months. They dont do breeding there. Only hatch them and rescue them. Dont forget 2k for foreigners and 1k for locals entry fees"

"Paid Rs 2000 for entrance as a foreigner. They share with you lots of information about the initiative and how the safe and rescue the turtle. If your really interested in turtles then migh be worth a visit. The whole experience takes about 10 min. Its not really for everyone. If you have no entrance in turtles then might be disappointed or find it underwhelming. The kids however might enjoy it. The highlight of the visit is carrying Monica (10kg turtle) and taking pics with her."
Osama Saeed
"Visited the sea turtle farm recently. As a local, the entrance fee was Rs. 500, which is reasonable. The place is decent and seems more geared toward tourists. If you're genuinely interested in sea turtles or conservation, it's worth a quick visit. But if you're not that into it, you might find it a bit underwhelming—probably better to just stay outside and enjoy the view. Overall, a good initiative, just not very engaging for everyone."

The Conservation Mission
Volunteers play a crucial role in the daily operations, from caring for the turtles to educating visitors. They explain the conservation process, highlighting the challenges faced by sea turtles and the importance of initiatives like this. The center houses several tanks for injured or sick turtles, providing them with necessary veterinary care.
While they don't engage in breeding programs, their focus on hatching and rescuing is vital. Hatchlings are typically kept for no more than three months before being released into the sea, ideally about 25 kilometers offshore to give them a better chance of survival.
Visitor Experience & Value
For many, the highlight is the opportunity to hold a larger, rescued turtle and take photos, a unique experience that makes the visit memorable. Witnessing the baby turtle releases, when scheduled, is another profoundly moving aspect of the visit.
However, some visitors, particularly locals, feel the entrance fee is high relative to the duration and engagement level of the tour. If you're not particularly passionate about turtles or conservation, you might find the experience underwhelming for the cost.
