The Sampur lighthouse located in the opposite side of the Trincomalee natural harbour in the Koddiyar bay at Foul point which is also called Kevuliya point. Built in 1863 by British who occupied the country at that time. It's a 21m tall structure built using granite. It was in dilapidated state until recently and restored in 2018-2019 and is used actively.
The lighthouse and the surrounding area belongs to the ports authority and actively secured by the Sri Lankan navy.
Reaching there is bit difficult as the last leg of the road is not paved. It's bit stressful for smaller vehicles but it doesn't prevent you from reaching there.
There is a navy post with a barrier just before the lighthouse and you have to park your vehicles there. The navy personnel will get your details and allow to enter the protected grounds. There is bit of a distance you have to walk to reach the lighthouse.
The area is very beautiful with blue skies, turquoise ocean and white sandy beach. Bathing is not allowed and sea is deep and rough yet beautiful. All these with the lighthouse creates a magnificent view. You can't go inside the structure but you can walk around the platform. It could be very windy so be careful if you take children with you.
There are several wrecked boats in the surrounding beach. They were results of 2004 tsunami. They kind of provide nostalgic feeling.
The area is pretty dry and harsh. No shops are available. So don't forget your drinks and snacks.
Most importantly don't litter the area. Enjoy the scenery and leave behind only the footsteps."
