Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Sant Bartomeu Church for its unique fortress architecture and historical significance, noting its picturesque blue doors and gothic arches. The church's central location by the market and the pleasant atmosphere of the surrounding square, especially at dusk, are frequently highlighted as enjoyable aspects of the visit.

"The fortress Church of San Bartolomé (named after one of the 12 Apostles) was used to defend Jávea from attacks from the sea. The bell tower was used as a watchtower and lookout for Barbary pirates. The bells inside the tower (that notified the town of attacks) were melted for ammunition during the Spanish civil war but two bells were salvaged and recast to make the current bells. The battlements are missing along with the silver ornamentation inside (looted by the French in 1812) but the gothic arches are lovely as well as the blue doors. It’s right by the Mercado with lots of nearby cafes. Take a seat and enjoy the view of the church at dusk."

"Both fortress and a church, a pretty unusual combination. Apparently a fortress to help protect the townspeople from pirate attacks. Notice gun slits and holes in the upper stone for throwing objects ( and possibly hot oil!) on attackers. Simple inside. All windows high up. Not easy to see the inside, this was just before a funeral"

The Fortress Church: A History of Defense

Sant Bartomeu Church in Jávea is a fascinating example of a fortress church, a structure designed for both worship and defense. Its origins lie in protecting the townspeople from frequent Barbary pirate attacks that plagued the Mediterranean coast. The bell tower served as a crucial watchtower, providing early warnings of approaching ships. You can still observe remnants of its defensive past, such as gun slits and strategic openings in the upper stone, designed to repel attackers. Reddit

While the church has undergone changes over centuries, including the melting of its original bells for ammunition during the Spanish Civil War, its historical role as a sanctuary and a stronghold remains evident. The missing battlements and looted ornamentation are testaments to its turbulent past, yet the core structure, with its gothic arches, continues to stand as a symbol of resilience. Reddit

Visiting Sant Bartomeu offers a unique opportunity to connect with this layered history. The gothic arches are a prominent feature, adding a sense of grandeur and historical depth to the structure. One of the most distinctive visual elements are the blue doors. These vibrant doors offer a striking contrast to the stone facade, making them a popular subject for photography. The bell tower, while functional as a former watchtower, also contributes significantly to the church's silhouette and visual impact on the town's skyline. Instagram

Even though some of the original ornamentation has been lost to time and conflict, the church's inherent beauty shines through its robust construction and key features. The high-set windows, a practical defensive measure, also create a unique play of light inside, contributing to its peaceful, albeit simple, interior ambiance. Reddit
