Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Casa de los Hevia for its well-executed permanent exhibition on Charles V's arrival in Spain, finding it both informative and engaging. The building's historical architecture and its role as a restored cultural center, including a tourist office and library, are also highly appreciated. Some visitors note that while the building is historic, much of its original interior has been renovated.

"Water Street, Villaviciosa.

As the name suggests, the Hevia family was one of the most prestigious in Villaviciosa. Wealth, property, and prestige lent luster to this surname.
The original house dates back to the 16th century. It has a square floor plan, three stories, and a very handsome central corridor. Few original elements remain, including an interior stone staircase and a walnut partition on the top floor.
It was completely renovated in the 19th century and then restored a few decades ago.
Aside from the obvious, it is famous for the four-day stay of a young prince from Ghent (who didn't speak a word of Castilian). His route was destined for the port of Santander, but such are the ways of the sea that they arrived on the coast of Villaviciosa on September 19, 1517. They disembarked in Tazones, and he was entertained in this house—naturally, the finest in the town—while the young man rested after such a perilous journey. Afterwards, he headed towards Castile, where, as fate would have it, and with great courage, he claimed the inheritance of his ancestors. He arrived in Valladolid on November 18th with a distinguished entourage. With luck on his side, he managed to persuade the Castilian nobility, resistant to change and the novelty embodied by this young prince, to unite his many kingdoms and become Charles I, "the Caesar."

Currently, it's a multipurpose center run by the city council, serving residents and visitors. It's well worth a visit. Enjoy your stroll."

"The former Hevia residence in Villaviciosa has been exquisitely restored and now converted into a multidisciplinary center. The tourist information office is located on the ground floor; there is also a remarkable library on the second floor; and the third floor houses a magnificent permanent exhibition on Charles V, which will provide a highly entertaining and accessible introduction to the fascinating story behind his arrival in Spain and eventual coronation. A must-see!"

The Historical Significance: Charles V's Arrival

Casa de los Hevia holds a pivotal place in Spanish history as the site where a young Prince Charles, heir to a vast empire, first set foot in Spain in 1517. Due to adverse weather, his ship diverted from Santander to the nearby coast of Tazones, and the finest residence available in Villaviciosa, the Casa de los Hevia, was prepared for his four-day stay. This unexpected stop was crucial, as Charles, who spoke little Castilian, needed to rest and prepare before embarking on his journey to Valladolid to claim his inheritance and eventually become Charles I of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Reddit

The exhibition within Casa de los Hevia vividly recounts this momentous event, making history accessible and engaging for visitors. It highlights the challenges of his journey, the political climate upon his arrival, and the significance of his subsequent reign. The narrative is presented in a way that is both informative and entertaining, ensuring that even those with limited historical knowledge can appreciate the importance of this period. InstagramReddit

This historical connection transforms Casa de los Hevia from a mere old building into a living testament to a defining moment in European history. It offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past and understand the foundations of the Spanish Empire. Reddit

Architectural Heritage and Restoration

The Casa de los Hevia is an excellent example of traditional Asturian architecture, with its origins tracing back to the 16th century. Originally a manor house belonging to the influential Hevia family, it features a characteristic square floor plan and a central corridor. While the house has undergone significant renovations, notably in the 19th century and a more recent restoration, some original elements have been preserved. These include a striking interior stone staircase and a distinctive walnut partition on the top floor, offering glimpses into its past grandeur. Reddit

The restoration efforts have been crucial in transforming the building into a functional multidisciplinary center while respecting its historical integrity. The exterior showcases the robust construction typical of Asturian vernacular architecture, often built with local stone and wood. The careful preservation of key internal features allows visitors to appreciate the craftsmanship of earlier eras. Reddit

Today, Casa de los Hevia stands as a beautifully restored historical monument, seamlessly blending its medieval roots with modern utility. It serves as a cultural hub for Villaviciosa, demonstrating how historical buildings can be revitalized to serve contemporary community needs. Reddit
