Reviews Summary

Visitors are awestruck by the sheer size and architectural ambition of Valladolid Cathedral, with the bell tower offering spectacular city views. While the interior is described by some as stark, the Diocesan Museum is considered a valuable addition. The bell tower tour is a highlight, though its price and potential vertigo-inducing nature are noted.

"The tickets for the bell tower had to be purchased at the tourist office so that was another 10 minute walk from the Cathedral itself in low 30s temperature but there were no tickets for today so we booked those for tomorrow, quite pricey at €12 each so I hope they are worth it!
The next day we arrived at the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Valladolid for our tower tour. After a little wait by the Archives entrance door we were let inside and met the lady leading the tour. She explained it was only in Spanish and we then took the lift to the floor with the bells on before we changed to another lift, went up a few more floors and then climbed the final few flights of stairs.
The views outside were as impressive as expected and the guide explained what each of the main buildings were and a potted history of the city. This took a long time and didn't really help my vertigo as we were probably on the exterior walkway for about 20 minutes! This was further exacerbated by Deb stamping on one of the metal boards which caused it to reverberate under by feet and I thought the whole structure was collapsing. She and Mother found it funny though so it's nice to see their true nature revealed!
The views were impressive and the lady leading the tour was fabulous and she took a great pride in her city. It was worth the money, despite the vertigo and was an educational hour."

"Perhaps one of the LARGEST catedrals I have seen in my life!
The walls are THICK and HUGE and HIGH.

BUT... the inside of the Cathedral is a dismal scene.
It looks abandoned, forlorn.
Very sad for the mother church of the city.

Wanted to find somewhere to give a donation, and could not even locate a donation box......

Opening hours- check before going.
Usually closed in between the day."

"One of the many churches is Valladolid, with a tall slender Romanesque tower topped with an arrow covered with tiles, which makes it, the tallest Romanesque bell tower in Spain. It is visible from many parts in central town. The rest of the building is Gothic and Neo-Gothic , as it was built in the 14th century and, after later additions in different styles, it was extensively restored and rebuilt in the first half of the 20th century .Inside is rather rustic compared to other cathedrals. Entrance to the church is free, with €3 for the museum and €10 for a bell tower visit."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Ambitious History of Valladolid Cathedral

Valladolid Cathedral, officially the Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, boasts a fascinating, albeit unfinished, history. The original project, initiated in the 16th century, was designed by the renowned architect Juan de Herrera, who also designed El Escorial. His vision was for one of the most imposing Renaissance cathedrals in Europe. However, the ambitious plans were never fully realized due to financial constraints and shifting architectural trends. Instagram+1

Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent numerous additions and modifications, leading to a blend of styles rather than a singular cohesive design. While the Renaissance core remains, Gothic and Neo-Gothic elements were incorporated, and extensive restoration occurred in the 20th century. This complex evolution means the cathedral is a testament to evolving architectural tastes and the challenges of monumental construction. InstagramReddit

Despite its unfinished nature, the sheer scale of the cathedral is impressive, with its thick, high walls and the striking Romanesque bell tower, which is the tallest of its kind in Spain. This tower, topped with a tiled arrow, is a prominent landmark visible from many parts of central Valladolid. Reddit The cathedral's interior, while described by some as rustic or forlorn, still holds a solemn grandeur. Reddit

Experiencing the Bell Tower Tour

The bell tower tour at Valladolid Cathedral is a popular, albeit pricey, activity offering unparalleled views of the city. Visitors typically purchase tickets from the tourist office, and it's advisable to do so in advance as they can sell out. The tour involves a combination of lifts and stairs, leading you to the bell chamber and then to the exterior walkways. Reddit

Once on the exterior walkway, you'll have about 20 minutes to soak in the panoramic vistas. A guide usually accompanies the tour, pointing out key landmarks and sharing historical anecdotes about Valladolid. This educational aspect is highly valued by many visitors. However, for those with a fear of heights or vertigo, the exposed walkways can be a significant challenge. Reddit

Despite the potential for vertigo and the cost, most reviewers agree that the experience is worth it. The breathtaking views and the informative commentary make for a memorable hour. Just be prepared for the climb and the exposure to the elements. TikTokReddit
