While the legend is the main draw, the surrounding colonial architecture also adds to its appeal.
"Santa Catalina Gate (13th/18th centuries), located at 34 and 45 Santa Catalina de Roncesvalles Street, in Toro (Zamora). This gate of the third walled enclosure of the city is one of the four gates preserved in Toro. It gives access to the old town from the N-122 road, right in front of the Celtiberian boar. So named because it is adjacent to the Church of Santa Catalina, which dates from the 13th century, like the third walled enclosure, where the gate is inserted. King Pedro I of Castile (1350-69) entered the city under it (1356) to administer justice, during the Castilian noble rebellion (1354-56). Before this gate, King Philip II of Spain swore to respect the laws and privileges of the city of Toro. Semicircular brick arch topped by a bell gable, in the hollow or centre of which appears the inscription stone: "DURING THE REIGN OF THE CATHOLIC MAJESTY OF DON FERNANDO VI AND BEING INTENDENT OF THIS CITY AND PROVINCE DON FRANCISCO ANTONIO DE IVAR Y VELÁZQUEZ THIS ARCH WAS EXECUTED. YEAR 1752". Inscription that gives us the year of its reconstruction -in brick- (1752), but we can see at first glance that it predates -since the legs of the arch are made of stone ashlars- the third walled enclosure (13th century). Don Francisco Antonio de Ivar Velázquez was the first intendant (1750-54) of the old province of Toro and at the same time mayor of the city of Toro, under King Ferdinand VI of Spain (1746-59)."
