Reviews Summary

Visitors find Puente Mayor de Toro to be a beautiful and historically significant landmark, offering charming views of the Duero River. While some note its somewhat neglected state, its enduring architecture and peaceful atmosphere are widely appreciated, making it a worthwhile stop for its historical value and scenic appeal.

"A bridge from the vicinity of the viewpoint from Toro. There was supposed to be an older bridge in its place from the 12 century and later this stone bridge was built in its place. It's believed to have Roman connections. The present bridge was used to connect Toro to the cities on the other side of the bank. By the 21st century it lost it's use due to other national roads, motorways and modern bridges across the Duero River.
The present photos are of the overflow of the river today and we can see the river being overflowed to the adjoining fields. Another photo from the viewpoint is also given."

A Bridge Through Time: The History of Puente Mayor de Toro

Puente Mayor de Toro is more than just a crossing; it's a historical artifact. Its origins are believed to be a wooden bridge dating back to 1194, a testament to its long-standing importance in the region. The current stone structure, characterized by its 22 pointed arches, was built to replace the earlier wooden one. This impressive feat of medieval engineering has weathered centuries of challenges, including significant damage during the War of Independence when two of its arches were deliberately destroyed to impede troop movement. TikTok

The bridge has also endured the natural forces of the Duero River, with visible scars from successive floods, collapses, and reconstructions. This resilience has shaped its current form and narrative. Originally a vital connection between Toro and the communities on the opposite bank, its strategic importance diminished with the advent of modern roads, motorways, and newer bridges across the Duero. Today, it serves primarily as a pedestrian walkway, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the past and appreciate the enduring spirit of this historical landmark. Reddit

The bridge's unusual orientation, with the river flowing parallel to it rather than perpendicular, is a fascinating detail, likely due to a change in the river's course after the bridge's construction. This unique characteristic adds another layer to its historical and geographical intrigue. Reddit
