"Construction began in the 15th century, but the current building dates from the 18th century.
The Cathedral Precentor, Don Diego de Lobera, who died in 1502, built a more elaborate church than the original, of which no traces remain. The custodians of that first church, Franciscans, made repairs in 1521, beautifying the chapel, which they themselves cared for. Pope Leo X granted "an indulgence to those who contributed to such a healthy and holy purpose."
The transformation was very short-lived, because Bishop Don Diego de Arce y Reinoso took advantage of the created environment and, demolishing the existing church, built a larger and more beautiful one. The new building remained in this new house until 1720, when the current one was built. In three years, the magnificent work we admire today was completed. They proudly inscribed this inscription on the main façade. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary appeared to a goatherd and showed him where an image of her was hidden by Christians fleeing Muslim invaders. One of the miracles told of by legend is that at the site where the hermitage was to be built, the workers left their tools and construction materials, disappeared, and reappeared at the highest point, where they say the Virgin Mary wanted it to be built."

"As a Plasencia native who has always lived outside the country but visits Plasencia frequently throughout the year, this corner, home to the patron saint of Plasencia, has always brought me peace. A moment inside the church, visiting the Virgin, and a moment contemplating the views from the Jerte River from the back, observing how the colors change with the seasons, recharges my batteries for a long season. It's well worth the climb."
