Este sábado hemos celebrado la festividad de Santa Juliana en Santillana del Mar, cuya colegiata románica está dedicada a la virgen. Un día en el que hemos disfrutado del folclore y tradición al son de las panderetas en un enclave único.

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Santillana del Mar's incredibly picturesque medieval streets and well-preserved historic architecture, calling it a charming and welcoming town. However, some find it can get quite overcrowded with tourists, and beyond strolling and admiring the buildings, there aren't many extensive activities, making it best suited for a short visit.

"A small, very old town with cobblestone streets and well-preserved buildings that showcase its history. Although picturesque, it can feel a bit overcrowded with tourists, and there aren't many activities beyond the promenade and a few shops. Ideal for a short visit and for those who enjoy medieval architecture, but don't expect much in the way of entertainment."

Alejandra Arias

"Another Google curiosity: there was an attraction, "Centro Histórico de Santillana" (Site of Historical Interest), which disappeared with all the reviews it had (there were many). Now this new one appears, "Centro Histórico de Santillana del Mar" (Site of Historical Interest), activated as a "Tourist Attraction" with just a few reviews. WE HAVE ADDED THE REVIEW AND PHOTOS WE TOOK AT THE TIME of the previous attraction. (Disappeared) The best way to explore the town's historic center is to start from the Tourist Office, head toward the pedestrian zone on Calle de la Carrera, until you reach the Collegiate Church. Then, walk back a little along Calle Racial to the Plaza Mayor, and then along Calle Juan Infante until you reach the intersection where we started on Calle de la Carrera. This route, with its narrow cobbled streets and spectacular period buildings and houses, is home to almost all of the town's attractions. This route also includes restaurants and a variety of shops, among other things."

A Glimpse into Medieval Spain

Santillana del Mar's historic center is a remarkably well-preserved example of medieval Spanish architecture. Its designation as a 'Site of Historical Interest' underscores its importance. The town's layout, with its narrow, winding cobblestone streets and stone buildings, transports visitors back in time. Many of these structures date back to the 14th to 18th centuries, showcasing a rich architectural heritage that has been carefully maintained. TikTokReddit

The town's history is deeply intertwined with the nearby Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, a significant Romanesque monument. Walking through the town, you'll encounter noble houses and towers that speak of its past importance. The preservation efforts have been so successful that it feels like stepping onto a historical film set. Reddit

While the town is undeniably beautiful, it's important to note that its popularity means it can get quite crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. Visitors often recommend exploring early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the largest crowds and enjoy a more serene experience. Reddit

Navigating the Charming Streets

The primary way to experience Santillana del Mar is on foot. The historic center is a pedestrian-only zone, encouraging visitors to wander and discover its charm at their own pace. The streets are paved with cobblestones, which, while beautiful, can be uneven and slippery, especially after rain. Therefore, wearing comfortable and sturdy footwear is highly recommended. TikTok

Navigating the town is straightforward due to its compact size. The main route often suggested starts from the Tourist Office, leading through Calle de la Carrera, Calle Racial, Plaza Mayor, and Calle Juan Infante. This loop covers most of the key sights and offers a good sense of the town's layout. Reddit

Be prepared for some inclines and narrow passages. While this adds to the medieval character, it's something to consider if you have mobility concerns. Despite the potential challenges, the immersive experience of walking through these historic streets is a significant part of Santillana del Mar's appeal. Reddit
