"Nice beach and nice surrounding area. Curious sculpture on the water"
João Miguel Quaresma
"In the year 986, when the Rías Baixas were still the scene of Norman raids, Sanxenxo was just a fishing port protected by Don Froilán de Aldán. The town lived in constant fear of raids by northerners, who ravaged villages in search of gold and slaves.
In the midst of that time of iron and fire, an unknown woman appeared whom the inhabitants called simply "A Madama." No one ever knew where she came from: some claimed she was a noble lady banished from León, others that she was descended from the druids who had guarded the coast centuries before. The truth is that she possessed an inexplicable gift: she spoke to the sea, and it responded to her voice.
On nights with a full moon, around the year 989, people saw her walk to the shore of Silgar beach, where with a gesture she calmed storms that threatened to sink boats. The fishermen began to venerate her as a protector, although she always shunned the honors.
In the summer of 994, a Norman fleet returned with unprecedented strength. Don Froilán gathered his men, but everyone knew they were insufficient against the enemy. That same evening, A Madama appeared at the castle council and swore that she herself would defend the town.
On the night of the attack, when the invaders attempted to land at Silgar, they saw the moonlit woman emerge from the waters. The sea surrounded her obediently: with a gesture, she raised a wall of waves that capsized and smashed the enemy ships against the rocks of the coast. The few who reached the sand fled, convinced they had faced a sea goddess.
At dawn, A Madama disappeared forever. Some claimed to have seen her melt into foam and disappear over the horizon. From that day on, the Normans never returned to Sanxenxo.
In 1502, the descendants of those fishermen erected a statue on Silgar Beach, in the same place where it had last been seen. Since then, when the tide surrounds its stone feet, many claim that a murmur can still be heard among the waves: the voice of the eternal guardian who saved Sanxenxo.
Of course, this story is completely fabricated."

The Legend of A Madama
Erected in 1502, the original statue was a tribute from the descendants of the fishermen she supposedly saved. The current sculpture, created by Galician artist Alfonso Vilar Lamelas and donated in 1995, stands on a rock known as 'La Piedra del Corbeiro' (The Raven's Rock) in the sea. It's inspired by Celtic mythology, further connecting it to the region's ancient roots and the power of the ocean. Visitors often feel a connection to this legend, imagining the sea responding to her voice.
