Fantastic !"

"This is a fascinating church in a beautiful square in the Old Town, La Ciudad. The square,Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, has a beautiful little park and also houses the impressive Ayuntamiento de Ronda ( Town hall ). The square is just down the street from the Mondregal Palace and is a very short distance from Puente Nuevo but could be a million miles away from hustle and bustle of the tourist trail and selfie shower.
The church charges €4 entry but is well worth more. It was originally a Roman Temple , then a Mosque and then converted to a Catholic Parish Church. The beautiful bell tower was originally a minaret and like the Giralda had a bell tower added when constructed as a church. Inside the door is the remains of the Mihrab ( the Muslim door facing Mecca ) , a very impressive choir stalls in beautifully carved wood. The nave is divided from the choir by a beautiful wall of copper images of the Stations of The Cross. An excellent treasury has some lovely pieces."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Tapestry of History: From Mosque to Church

The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor in Ronda is a remarkable testament to the region's complex past. Originally constructed as a mosque during the Moorish period, it was later converted into a Catholic church following the Christian Reconquista in 1485. This transformation is evident in its architecture, which beautifully blends Islamic and Christian elements. Reddit

Visitors can still see remnants of its mosque origins, most notably the intricately decorated horseshoe arches of the mihrab, the prayer niche that once faced Mecca. The elegant arches and the general layout hint at its Islamic heritage. The church also suffered damage from an earthquake in 1580, leading to significant rebuilding in the Renaissance style, further layering its architectural narrative. Reddit

Exploring the church is like walking through centuries of history. The ornate interior, featuring beautiful altars and a stunning choir, contrasts with the more ancient Moorish elements. This juxtaposition makes Santa María la Mayor a compelling site for anyone interested in the historical and cultural evolution of Andalusia. Reddit

The Unmissable Rooftop Panorama

One of the most highly recommended features of the Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor is its rooftop viewing deck. Accessible via a beautiful stone-carved staircase, this vantage point offers unparalleled panoramic views of Ronda. From here, you can gaze out over the historic cityscape, the dramatic Tajo gorge, and the surrounding Andalusian countryside. InstagramReddit

Many visitors highlight the rooftop as a significant draw, often stating it's worth the modest entrance fee alone. The views are particularly stunning during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, when the light casts a warm glow over the ancient town. It's an ideal spot for photography and for simply soaking in the breathtaking scenery. Instagram+1

Be prepared for a bit of a climb, but the reward is immense. The 360-degree perspective provides a unique appreciation for Ronda's dramatic setting and its historical layout. It's a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the bustling tourist activity, offering a truly memorable experience. Instagram

Exploring the Crypt and Treasury

Beyond the main church and its stunning rooftop views, the crypt of Santa María la Mayor holds its own historical treasures. This subterranean area houses a collection of very old books, some dating back as far as the 12th century. These ancient tomes offer a fascinating glimpse into the church's past and the preservation of knowledge over the centuries. Reddit

Adjacent to the crypt, you'll find a small exhibit of old icons and a treasury that contains several lovely pieces. These artifacts provide further insight into the religious and artistic history associated with the church. While perhaps less visually dramatic than the rooftop, these areas offer a deeper, more intimate connection to the site's heritage. Reddit

Taking the time to explore these less-visited sections enriches the overall experience. It allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the church's evolution and the artifacts it has safeguarded throughout its long history. Reddit
