Reviews Summary

Playa Jardín is praised for its stunning botanical gardens and unique black volcanic sand, offering a beautiful backdrop for relaxation and exploration. Visitors appreciate the scenic coastal walk and the on-site restaurant. However, some find the rocky seabed challenging for swimming and snorkeling, and a few mention a desire for more shower facilities.

"Decided to try here for snorkeling, we found where the sand was with no rocks but as soon as we got into the water there were rocks everywhere causing a few bashed ankles. However once passed the waves which were enormous the water was calm enough to snorkel but the water was so cloudy and dark you couldn't see anything!

Beach was nice enough really hot black sand.

Needs more showers and maybe a little privacy area for parents who think it's okay to let their children shower naked whilst others are waiting to shower!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Architectural and Botanical Marvel of Playa Jardín

Playa Jardín is more than just a beach; it's a carefully designed urban landscape conceived by the renowned Canarian artist and architect César Manrique. The entire area, including the beach, the surrounding gardens, and the playgrounds, was developed with a focus on integrating art and nature. The botanical gardens are a key feature, boasting a rich collection of plants, trees, and flowers, creating a lush and vibrant environment that contrasts beautifully with the dark volcanic sand. This thoughtful design makes it a unique and visually stunning destination. TikTokInstagram

The gardens are meticulously maintained, offering shaded pathways and diverse flora that attract various bird species. Visitors often praise the beauty and tranquility of these green spaces, which provide a welcome respite from the sun. The integration of waterfalls, volcanic rock formations, and artistic elements throughout the gardens enhances the overall aesthetic appeal, making it a delightful place for a leisurely stroll and photography. Instagram

Beyond the visual appeal, Playa Jardín is designed for public enjoyment. It features playgrounds for children, making it a family-friendly destination. The promenade that stretches along the coast connects Playa Jardín to other nearby beaches, inviting exploration and offering different perspectives of the coastline. This comprehensive approach to urban beach design by Manrique has resulted in a beloved local and tourist spot. Instagram

Experiencing the Black Sand Beach

The most striking feature of Playa Jardín is its black volcanic sand. This unique characteristic, common in the Canary Islands, gives the beach a dramatic and exotic appearance. The sand can get quite hot under the Tenerife sun, so wearing sandals or flip-flops is recommended when walking on the beach. TikTokInstagram

While the black sand is visually appealing, visitors should be aware of the seabed composition. Reviews mention that the water can be rocky, especially closer to the shore, which can make swimming and snorkeling a bit challenging and potentially lead to bashed ankles. However, once you navigate past the initial waves, the water can become calmer. Reddit

Despite the rocky patches, the beach is generally considered clean and offers a pleasant environment for sunbathing and relaxing. The presence of sunbeds for rent adds to the comfort of visitors. The waves can sometimes be significant, leading to 'red flag' days where swimming is discouraged for safety reasons. Instagram
