"Palencia is located in the middle of the immense plains that make up the fertile Terra de Campos. The urban center extends from north to south, enclosed within the narrow limits imposed by the Carrión River to the west and the railway line to the east. In this historic city, Alfonso VIII of Castile created the second Spanish university in 1208. Although the Studium Generale of Palencia, the germ of the future university, was before that of Salamanca, the same cannot be said of the universities, since the one of Salamanca, founded by the Galician king Alfonso VIII of León (IX for Spanish historiography) is the oldest in Spain and one of the four oldest in Europe, and was also the first European educational institution to obtain the title of university by a bull of Alexander IV in the year 1255. This peaceful city invites us to take a walking tour to visit its main monuments.
