What Travellers Say
"The Salazar Tower was built in the late 15th century, around 1494, by Ochoa de Salazar.
Originally, it served as the residence of the town's provost and also as a public jail.
Throughout its history, it has undergone various transformations and reconstructions, especially after a fire in 1934.
The reconstruction that gives it its current appearance was carried out between 1958 and 1959.
In the year 2000, the portugalete town hall acquired it, and in 2003 the last restoration was carried out.
It is a late medieval tower-house with a quadrangular floor plan and four floors. Notable features include its masonry walls, ashlar reinforcements at the corners and openings, and the crenellations at the top.
It retains original elements such as arrow slits and the original entrance on the second floor, with the Salazar coat of arms.
Currently, it houses a museum that offers exhibitions on the history of Portugalete and the Salazar family. Although it was closed a the time of my visit"
