Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate A Moureira Quarter for its authentic historical atmosphere and its connection to Pontevedra's maritime past. It offers a quieter, more reflective experience compared to the bustling city center, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the region's seafaring heritage. Some find the historical context enriches the visit, though it's noted that modern amenities are more prevalent in adjacent areas.

"A Moureira de Pontevedra was a suburb in the lower part of the city, next to the sea, outside the walls, inhabited by sailors and fishermen. The name comes from “moira” or in Latin “muria” or “salmoira”. As it was a port with royal privileges, all the fish from the ports near the estuary had to be brought to the A Moureira neighborhood for unloading, drying, salting and sale. As a result of these privileges, the neighborhood would become extremely prosperous and would become the driving force of Pontevedra in the 15th to 17th centuries. The fishermen were organized around the “Confraternity of the Holy Body” based in the church of Santa María a Maior, under the auspices of San Telmo. The neighborhood was large and crowded and extended from the Porta da Galera to Campo das Rodas, going up towards Campo de Santo Domingo, delimited by the docks on the banks of the Lérez River. It was divided into three areas: Moureira de Arriba: the area where the church, the docks and the shipyards where galleys and caravels were built, such as the Santa María or A Galega; Moureira da Barca: for the boat that crossed Portosanto, beyond the Lérez, and which gives its name to the current Ponte da Barca; and Moureira de Abaixo: the most inhabited area and dedicated to fishing and the different trades related to the sea, with its riverside carpentry docks and fish salting factories. The Arrabalde de A Moureira had four accesses to the city: the Santa María gate, the Barral gate, the Santo Domingo gate and the Ribeiro gate."
