What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Playa de la Pelada is lauded as a beautiful, secluded beach offering a peaceful escape with stunning photographic opportunities thanks to its reflective volcanic sand. Visitors appreciate the accepting naturist atmosphere and the natural beauty, though strong winds can sometimes make the fine sand a nuisance.
"Lovely little secluded beach. Perfect for spending the day with picnic. Plenty of nudists varying from older couples, single men, young couples and families, everyone accepting of each other and not bothering each other, so felt comfortable stripping off as well. The only down side was that the 2nd time we went out was very windy and the fine, volcanic sand went everywhere and made it only possible to stay for an hour. Very picturesque, though."

"Hidden gem beach. I stayed in a nearby hostel, woke up especially early on day of departure to airport to take a dip at sunrise. Absolutely marvelous"

The Unique Appeal of Volcanic Sand
However, this same volcanic sand can be a double-edged sword. When the wind picks up, it can whip the fine sand around, creating 'sandstorms' that can quickly make the beach unpleasant and get sand everywhere. Visitors are advised to be prepared for windy conditions, perhaps by bringing a sarong or a light cover-up to shield themselves. Despite this, the visual appeal of the dark sand against the blue ocean is undeniable and a major draw for those seeking a picturesque escape.
Understanding the Naturist Culture
While naturism is common, it's not exclusive. You'll also find people wearing bathing suits, and the coexistence is harmonious. The beach is described as a 'hidden gem' and a 'great escape' from more commercialized tourist areas, suggesting a more laid-back and authentic experience. Whether you choose to participate in naturism or not, the key is to respect the environment and the people around you.
Capturing the Magic: Photography Tips
Beyond the reflections, the beach's natural, secluded setting provides a dramatic backdrop. Consider using a wide-angle lens to capture the expanse of the beach and the ocean. A polarizing filter can enhance the colors and reduce glare on the wet sand. For those early morning or late evening shoots, a tripod will be essential for stable, sharp images. Don't forget to explore the possibility of climbing the hill above the beach for panoramic shots that showcase the entire coastline.
