Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the spectacular, awe-inspiring scenery of Picos de Europa, with its dramatic gorges and mountain tops offering unparalleled vistas. The well-marked trails are a highlight for hikers, though getting to some popular spots can be a bit of a challenge. Crowds, especially in summer and on narrow roads, are a common concern, but the sheer beauty of the park makes it a must-visit destination. Reddit

"Incredible views everywhere, truly spectacular National Park. There are many good trails, was very easy to follow and well maintained. Can highly recommend the hike to Vega de Ario refuge even over the lagos one."

RV

"It's not often I give a 5 star review but this place is exceptional. The scenery is spectacular, from river gorges to high mountain tops no photos can do it justice. Every twist and turn opens a new vista and it was an absolute joy to drive through and over it. Two caveats, the roads are very narrow and unfortunately full of camper vans and it can become very crowded, especially during summer season. However, it's not to be missed. Hiking canoeing and climbing are all very popular sports in the area and a shout out to the lovely guide in Trescares for all the wonderful information he gave us."

"Stunning scenery and well marked trails. Getting to it is a bit of a faff. We drove to Covadonga (v cool place) then if you hadn’t pre-ordered bus tickets you have either a taxi or shuttle. Shuttle was 12 euro return and you share with others. Once you are off an going it’s pretty efficient. The drive up to the lakes is epic, and I can see why they don’t want lots of cars. It’s busy at the meeting point & round the lakes but once you get out hiking in the trail it thins out v quickly. Trails are well marked and scenery is stunning. Allow at least a half day."

Hiking Adventures in Picos de Europa

Picos de Europa National Park is a hiker's paradise, boasting an extensive network of trails catering to all levels. From gentle strolls through verdant valleys to challenging ascents of rugged peaks, there's a route for everyone. The Cares Trail is a world-renowned gorge hike, offering dramatic cliffside views, though it requires caution. For a more accessible yet rewarding experience, the trails around the Covadonga Lakes provide stunning reflections and opportunities to connect with nature. TikTokInstagram+1

When planning your hikes, consider the season. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, ideal for longer treks. Summer can be hot, so early morning hikes are recommended. Always check weather forecasts, as mountain conditions can change rapidly. Sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing, and sufficient water are essential for any excursion. TikTokReddit

For those seeking unique experiences, consider hiking to remote villages like Bulnes, accessible by a scenic trail or funicular, or staying overnight in a mountain refuge like Refugio Cabaña Verónica for an unforgettable alpine experience. TikTokInstagram These adventures offer a deeper immersion into the park's wild beauty and tranquility.

Exploring the Charming Villages

Beyond its dramatic landscapes, Picos de Europa is dotted with picturesque villages that offer a glimpse into traditional Asturian and Cantabrian life. Potes, often called the 'Villa de los Puentes' (Town of Bridges), is a medieval gem with a rich history and a lively atmosphere, perfect for exploring local crafts and cuisine. TikTok Another must-visit is Bulnes, a remote village nestled high in the mountains, accessible only by foot or a modern funicular, preserving its unique charm and offering breathtaking views. TikTok

These villages are not just beautiful to look at; they are gateways to experiencing the local culture and gastronomy. Indulge in regional specialties like Cabrales cheese, a potent blue cheese, and the hearty 'cachopo', a large veal steak filled with ham and cheese. Enjoying a glass of local cider ('sidra') in a traditional 'sidrería' is an essential part of the experience. TikTok+1

When visiting these villages, remember that many have narrow, winding streets. Parking can be limited, especially during peak season.
