Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Convent of San Francisco impressive and historically significant, particularly its cloister and restored frescoes. However, frequent closures due to ongoing renovations are a common point of disappointment, making it essential to check accessibility before visiting.

"Looks very impressive and interesting. Unfortunately, it is closed."

"The Convent is included in the visit to the Castle; in fact, you enter through here. The Convent remains standing and is well preserved, except for the part that has been restored, because much work still remains. Only three-quarters of the courtyard can be visited; the rest is in ruins. The Convent itself has no furnishings that remain from when it was occupied. We saw that it is still under construction, so I assume they will gradually restore it to its original state. The bathrooms were on one side of the courtyard; the women's bathroom had two toilets and they were clean."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Artistry of the Chapter House

The Chapter House of the Convent of San Francisco is a treasure trove of medieval art, most notably its 15th-century fresco paintings. These recently restored artworks depict the Tree of Life and the Dance of Death, powerful allegories reflecting the anxieties of the Late Middle Ages, particularly the impact of the Black Death. The iconography serves as a stark reminder of the ephemeral nature of worldly joys and the importance of a Christian death. Reddit

These frescoes are not just visually striking; they offer a profound insight into the medieval mindset. The theme of death, depicted as an equalizer for all, regardless of social standing or age, was prevalent during this period. The satirical intention behind the imagery, showing everyone succumbing to death, highlights a societal grappling with mortality and the desire for spiritual preparedness. The restoration efforts have brought these vivid scenes back to life, allowing visitors to connect with this significant historical and artistic narrative. Reddit

Architectural Significance: The Cloister and Church

The cloister stands as the oldest element of the Convent of San Francisco, characterized by its irregular floor plan and a sober decorative style typical of mendicant communities in the early Valencian Gothic period. Its portals, though now roofless, still showcase trilobed arches resting on capitals with simple prismatic shapes. Beneath these, tetralobed columns with similarly shaped bases are supported by a parapet, adorned only by a simple molding. This understated elegance speaks to the functional and spiritual purpose of the space. Reddit

While much of the convent is in ruins or under restoration, the church remains are also a significant part of the complex. These remnants, along with the cloister and chapter house, provide a tangible connection to the convent's past. The historical context of its foundation, attributed to James I the Conqueror, and its subsequent deterioration due to confiscation of church property, add layers of historical depth to the architectural exploration.
