What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Cafebreria Ad Hoc is celebrated for its charming, cozy atmosphere and unique concept of a cafe combined with a bookstore, offering a peaceful escape for readers. While many appreciate the 'no laptops' policy for fostering tranquility, some visitors have found the staff less welcoming and the policy restrictive.
"It was raining. We had been walking around after shopping in the area, when we found this place. And, it was our salvation. So calm. So elegant. You can enjoy a warm cup of tea while surrounding by bookshelves. Also, I bought one book for keep it like a good memory of this day. THANK U SO MUCH!!!"

"In few words | Nice and cute bookstore where you can have a coffee (price average to low) while reading or chatting. BEWARE: No laptops allowed.
I think they have a good concept: Bookstore where you can choose a book that caught your eye, have a coffee and check if you like it and then buy it.
It is a cozy and aesthetic place, quite calm (in the back they have a bigger cafetería section, with more tables and space for more people, therefore more cheerful), perfect for a deep chat or reading and writing.
They don't allow laptops here. THIS IS NOT A WORK CAFÉ, so if you are looking for that you can pick from a dozen others in the area. It seems they don't offer WiFi to customers and that's fine by me, nowadays all the locals have enough data in their phones if they need to use it. For tourists it's a different thing and after checking some reviews I think most of the negative ones come from tourists that mistake the nature of the place as well as they rate very badly without having real reasons to do so."

"rude staff, expensive menu, no tablets allowed and they kick you out the moment you're done with your food. If you want a good library, Rafael Alberti is basically next door"

The Unique Concept: Cafe Meets Bookstore
The establishment intentionally cultivates a tranquil environment by prohibiting laptop use. This decision, while sometimes a point of contention for those seeking a workspace, is central to its charm. It ensures that the space remains dedicated to reading, quiet contemplation, and relaxed conversation, rather than becoming a hub for digital work. This focus on a screen-free experience is a deliberate choice to foster a unique and peaceful ambiance.
From the outside, the cafe might appear unassuming, but stepping inside reveals a warm, inviting space with soft lighting and gentle music. The back section offers a larger, more cheerful area with more tables, providing a slightly different vibe while maintaining the core essence of the cafe-bookstore. It's a place where the books 'whisper' and the coffee warms not just your hands, but your soul.
Navigating Customer Experiences: The Laptop Debate
Some reviews mention 'rude staff' or feeling unwelcome when attempting to stay longer after finishing their order, particularly if they were perceived as lingering. This feedback suggests a potential disconnect between the establishment's intended atmosphere and some customers' expectations. It's important for visitors to understand that Cafebreria Ad Hoc is not a traditional cafe where you can occupy a table for extended periods with a laptop.
For those seeking a quiet, book-centric experience without digital distractions, this policy is a major plus. It ensures that the space remains a sanctuary for readers. However, if your primary goal is to work remotely or use a laptop, other cafes in Madrid might be a better fit.
