What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the Almudena Cathedral for its stunning dome views and the unique experience of exploring its Romanesque crypt. While some note its modern construction compared to older European cathedrals, its proximity to the Royal Palace and vibrant chapels make it a worthwhile stop for many exploring Madrid.
"I had very high expectations for the Almudena, given that it is one of Madrid’s top attractions and one of the esteemed Catholic Churches in Madrid.
Upon entering (no guards, which was interesting) I liked the decoration especially with the candles and the humongous shells.
However the interior, though imposing, was not as decorative as I thought it would be. Perhaps it is because I have been to so many beautiful churches, like the Toledo cathedral.
Nonetheless, the atmosphere was surreal and felt incredible to be in. You can feel the energy of this place and the chantings and prayers of the people sitting nearby make this atmosphere feel powerful.
They have a neat little shop to the right when you enter. A good variety of beads and rosaries."

"This Cathedral is a very beautiful church the architecture of this church is magnificent and mind blowing. The church is wheelchair accessible and has plenty of seating to accommodate all the people that want to visit. The church has a small gift shop on left side of the entrance and the church also has statues all around that tell a unique story of Jesus, saints, priests, nuns, god, and the Virgin Mary, Overall this is a must visit if you are in town."

"The Almudena Cathedral in Madrid is a beautiful and peaceful place full of history and meaning. One of the highlights is the crypt it’s quiet, a bit mysterious, and very impressive with its old stone columns and peaceful atmosphere. The cathedral is right next to the Royal Palace of Madrid, so it’s easy to visit both in one trip. The connection between the two buildings gives the whole area a very royal and historic feeling.
Inside the cathedral, you can learn about the titles of Mary, Mother of Jesus, and see how she is honored in different ways. There are also interesting facts about important people like Pope Leo XIII and Alfonso VI, who are part of the cathedral’s story.
Some parts of the building date back to the late 1800s, like 1885 and 1883, and it’s fascinating to think about how long this place has been part of Madrid’s heart.
Overall, it’s not just a place for prayer it’s a place to explore Spanish history and culture. If you’re visiting nearby spots like Plaza Mayor, this cathedral is a must see."
