What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the monumental scale and artistic merit of Atlante sculptures, appreciating their scenic coastal locations and connection to mythology. However, some reviews highlight issues with site maintenance, lack of amenities like restrooms, and parking difficulties, particularly when adjacent to popular restaurants. Despite these drawbacks, the sculptures are frequently recommended for their visual impact and the panoramic views they offer.
"Unfortunately much of the area is under repairs. At least there is a sign telling you the name of the area and sculpture. No maps or information signage. No public toilets. No drinking fountains. Bits of garbage. Broken stairs and railings. Sidewalk is partially obstructed by construction and people double parking to go to the restaurant beside this sculpture and park. Access to shoreline limited and dangerous depending on ocean conditions. No lifeguard nor emergency equipment noticed onsite. Views are nice and it was relatively clean so 2 stars."

"El Atlante is a monumental sculpture by Tony Gallardo that stands 8.5 metres high and depicts a woman with raised arms in homage to the Atlantic.
The piece was inspired by the myth of Atlantis and is made with fragments of lava from the La Isleta volcanoes as part of Gallardo's "canary stones" period that explored the use of tuff and magma.
El Atlante was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest as a Monument in June 2018."

"It's a very peaceful place to stay, with spectacular views of the city and La Canteras beach. You can see the Confital and identify La Isleta from this point.
A place with several viewpoints not adapted for disabled people. They've just opened a restaurant bearing its name, and finding parking has become quite difficult."

The Mythology and Symbolism of Atlante Sculptures
Beyond the direct mythological links, 'Atlante' sculptures can embody broader concepts. Some are created using local materials, like volcanic rock in the Canary Islands, directly connecting the artwork to the earth and its geological history. This grounding in local context adds layers of meaning, speaking to regional identity and the relationship between humanity and its environment. The monumental scale of many Atlante sculptures further amplifies their symbolic weight, making them landmarks that command attention and inspire awe.
In contemporary art, the 'Atlante' motif can be reinterpreted to address modern concerns. The interactive digital art piece in Naples, for instance, uses a 3D scan of an Atlante to explore the intersection of ancient art and modern technology. This demonstrates how the enduring symbolism of the Atlante can be adapted to comment on current societal and technological landscapes, proving its timeless relevance.
Materials and Artistic Techniques
Other sculptures utilize stone, particularly local varieties like the lava fragments and tuff used in 'El Atlante' in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This approach connects the artwork directly to its environment and geological heritage. Wood carving is another technique employed, as seen in the 'Desbaste de atlante' piece, where the sculptor shapes the material to reveal the form within. This method requires skill in understanding the grain and properties of the wood.
Contemporary artists also explore innovative materials and methods. Vittorio Iavazzo's work involves paper sculpture and mold-making, demonstrating that even seemingly fragile materials can be used to create impactful forms. The interactive digital art piece in Naples highlights the use of 3D scanning and digital rendering, pushing the boundaries of what a 'sculpture' can be in the modern age. These varied techniques underscore the versatility of the Atlante theme and the creativity of artists across different mediums.
Atlante Sculptures as Public Art and Landmarks
The monumental scale of many Atlante sculptures, like the 14-meter-long bronze piece in Sanxenxo, ensures they are visually striking and memorable. They can act as focal points, encouraging people to pause, engage with art, and appreciate their surroundings. The 'El Atlante' in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is not only a sculpture but also a designated Asset of Cultural Interest, highlighting its importance to the region's heritage. This designation underscores the value placed on such artistic contributions to the public realm.
While often celebrated, the experience of visiting these public artworks can sometimes be marred by practical issues. Reports of ongoing repairs, lack of amenities, and parking difficulties can detract from the visitor experience. However, the enduring appeal of these sculptures lies in their ability to inspire, provoke thought, and beautify the spaces they inhabit, making them valuable additions to any city or town.
