Plaza de la Pila is a charming and historically significant square in Icod de los Vinos, praised for its architectural beauty and its role as the town's birthplace. "Pretty place to stop by"

Natalia Filar

"Popularly known as "Plaza de la Pila," this is a square located in the center of Icod de los Vinos, within the boundaries of the urban area declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the category of Historic Site (Decree 142/2004, of October 5). It is one of the most notable urban spaces in Icod, as it contains some of the city's most remarkable architectural elements from the 17th to 19th centuries.
The plaza has had several names throughout its history. Originally, it was called Plaza Mayor or Plaza Real de Icod. Later, in the 19th century, it was called Plaza de la Constitución, in commemoration of the Constitution of Cádiz of 1812. After the Civil War of 1936, it changed its name again to Plaza de Calvo Sotelo, only to recover the name of Constitution decades later, on the occasion of the Constitution of 1978. Despite this official name, in Icod it is popularly known as Plaza de la Pila, in allusion to the fountain installed in its center in 1716 that formerly served this part of the city."
