What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Ermita del Calvario a charming and historically significant chapel, particularly appreciated for its restoration. While the hermitage itself is well-regarded, some note that the surrounding plaza's water fountains are neglected, detracting slightly from the overall aesthetic. Access can be limited outside of mass times.
"Sunday catholic mass at 10 o'clock. Nice chapel during restauracion."

"The hermitage, which is located on the raised square that bears its name and is accessed by a staircase, was built by Second Lieutenant Don Matías Antonio Sopranis sometime before 1750, as can be deduced from historical documentation that refers to the will and foundation of an almshouse for the place. The area in which it was built was known as malpaís and was then on the outskirts of the urban complex, in a place where there were practically no buildings. The temple was built under the invocation of Our Lady of the Afflicted, and housed a Baroque sculpture of the Virgin, from the Sevillian school, but this disappeared after a fire that devastated the hermitage, after which it had to be rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century, with the Cáceres family holding its patronage at that time. In 2006, it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest."

Families with Kids
Keep expectations realistic, as the primary draw is the historical hermitage itself. The surrounding plaza is pleasant, but the mention of neglected fountains means it's not an area with extensive play facilities. It's best suited as a short, educational stop during a broader exploration of Garachico.
History Buffs
Researching the Sopranis family and the Cáceres family's patronage can provide deeper context. The hermitage's location in an area once known as 'malpaís' also speaks to the historical development of Garachico. Visiting during mass offers the best chance to experience the interior and its restored elements.

Historical Significance
This designation highlights its architectural and cultural value to the region. The hermitage's location on a raised square, accessed by a staircase, adds to its distinct character. While the original Sevillian school sculpture is lost, the restored chapel itself stands as a testament to its enduring legacy and the community's efforts to preserve it.
Visiting the Plaza del Calvario
However, it's worth noting that some elements within the plaza, specifically the water fountains located at the back, are described as being in a state of neglect. While this doesn't detract from the hermitage itself, it's a detail that some visitors have pointed out, suggesting that with a little more upkeep, the entire area could be even more picturesque.
