Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Gaztelugatxe's breathtaking beauty and dramatic coastal scenery, often comparing it to the fictional Dragonstone. The challenging climb is considered well worth the effort for the spectacular views and historical significance. However, the mandatory online reservation system can be frustrating if not planned for in advance, and the physical exertion of the steps is a significant factor for some. TikTokReddit

"Make sure you get reservations ahead of time. You will not be allowed to descend to the bridge if you do not have reservations. Also don't underestimate the amount of work it's going to take to fully enjoy this spectacular location. There is a more than 1 km hike on a cobblestone sidewalk down to the bridge and if you choose to go up to the top of the island it's another haul up there. And when you're finished you've got to climb back up more than 1 km at some very steep grades. We found it completely worth the effort after all was said and done. Wear some very comfortable and sturdy walking shoes and bring a bottle of water with you."

Russell H

"20mns walk to discover that you need a ticket to keep going. Which can only be bought on the internet. The first one available is in... 2h & a half. Even if the place is pretty much a no man's land. Annoying. Absurd. Irritating."

Olivier Bourlon

"Spanish joke with reservations and limit of 50p per hour. If you didn’t reserve a free ticket you will need to turn around. There and no local limit to entry - only online. So when you passed parking, small descend to gate - surprise!
You don’t need to descend just after restaurant you ca ln enter spam spot into bushes and see everything as from a dron."

Fans flock to this location to recreate iconic scenes and immerse themselves in the world of Westeros. TikTokInstagram+4

While the Game of Thrones connection is a significant attraction, Gaztelugatxe's own history and natural beauty are equally compelling. The site has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, adding layers of cultural significance to its visual splendor. TikTokInstagram

History and Significance

The name 'Gaztelugatxe' itself is derived from the Basque words 'gaztelu' (castle) and 'gatxe' (rock), translating to 'castle of the rock'. This name hints at its strategic importance throughout history. The hermitage dedicated to St. John the Baptist (San Juan) dates back to the 10th century, though evidence suggests earlier constructions may have existed. TikTokInstagram+1

Over the centuries, the hermitage has faced numerous challenges, including fires and attacks, leading to several reconstructions. Its location on a rocky islet made it a natural fortress. The site was also historically linked to the Kingdom of Navarre. TikTokInstagram

Beyond its historical fortifications, Gaztelugatxe holds spiritual significance. It's a place of pilgrimage, and local lore suggests that ringing the bell at the hermitage three times can grant wishes. TikTokInstagram

Navigating the Climb and Access

The journey to Gaztelugatxe is an adventure in itself, primarily due to the iconic staircase. Visitors must ascend approximately 241 steps to reach the hermitage perched atop the islet. This climb, while rewarding, requires a good level of physical fitness. TikTokInstagram

Beyond the steps, the overall trek involves a descent from the parking area to the bridge and a steep incline on the return journey. Many visitors recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes and bringing water to stay hydrated. TikTokReddit+1
