"The area known as Nicio Castle, its ruins, and surroundings are well worth the walk to visit.
It's a vast area and, thankfully, doesn't have any marked trails, so I recommend taking it slow and easy, with the respect that history and nature deserve, discovering the many surprising places hidden throughout the area."

"MTB cycling Natural area.
The Castle of Nicio is located in Alto Padrón, near the Castor and Padrón rivers, in the municipality of Estepona.

The Nicio Castle is part of a primitive Bastulo village, it would be rebuilt by the Romans and later by the Arabs, in the time of the taifas.

It was occupied between the ss. IX and XI, to be later definitively abandoned. It may be the hisn of Munt Nis mentioned in the chronicles as a Hafsunite fortress.
The Muqtabis of ibn Hayyan allows us to identify this castle with Hisn Munt Nis, a fortification that was to the west of Suhayl (Fuengirola). Years later, it was related to the Hisn al-Ward mentioned by ibn al-Jatib in the 14th century, deducing that it was built between the end of the 11th century, being abandoned in the Nasrid period. In Nicio you can see some parts with very visible repairs, redone with other materials, but the range of ceramics that appeared in the place shows its occupation until the time of the establishment of the Castilian-Nasrid border in the 16th century. A Journey Through Time: The History of Castillo del Nicio

The Castillo del Nicio Ruins are more than just stones; they are a layered testament to centuries of human activity. The site began as a primitive Bastulo village, laying its foundations in ancient times. This early settlement was later significantly rebuilt and expanded by the Romans, who recognized the strategic importance of the location. Following the Roman era, the Arabs further developed the fortress, particularly during the period of the taifas. It's believed to be the 'Hisn Munt Nis' mentioned in historical chronicles, a key fortress of the Hafsunite dynasty. Reddit

The castle saw its most active occupation between the 9th and 11th centuries. Historical records, such as those from ibn Hayyan, identify it with 'Hisn Munt Nis,' a fortification west of Suhayl. Later, it was linked to 'Hisn al-Ward,' built between the late 11th century and abandoned during the Nasrid period. Evidence of repairs using different materials indicates continuous use and adaptation over time. The range of ceramics found at the site confirms its occupation until the establishment of the Castilian-Nasrid border in the 13th century, marking its final period of significant historical relevance. Reddit
