"The Gothic Fountain of Blanes is a 15th-century architectural gem and one of the city's most emblematic symbols. Located in the heart of the old town, next to the Municipal Theater, this masterpiece of Catalan civil Gothic architecture stands out for its unique beauty and historical value. Built between 1438 and 1443, the fountain was commissioned by the Viscountess of Cabrera, Violant de Cabrera, and the wool spinners' guild."

"Font Gòtica Fountain
This is a magnificent civil Gothic fountain, very rare.
The fountain was built at the end of the 14th century by Violante de Cabrera, daughter of the Count of Prades. In his planes, light plays on centuries-old golden stones. Many of its elements stand out: a set of finials made with great care, a slender spire richly decorated, six stone figures of demons with human and irrational heads, and a central medallion with the coat of arms of Cabrera.
Its octagonal shape suggests that it must have been in the middle of a small square surrounded by the arches of Ample Street, and it was not straight as it is today, but irregular, which gave it the slenderness and high taste of water that its designer specified with six pumps. A few years ago, a group of people in Blanes studied how to move it so that it could be admired in its entirety, but technically this was considered impossible, since it would have required dismantling it piece by piece, and the corrosion they had suffered over the centuries did not allow it."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The History and Architecture of the Gothic Fountain
Originally, the fountain served a crucial purpose: providing drinking water to the town. The intensive mining activities of the Middle Ages had disrupted underground water sources, making water scarcity a significant issue. The construction of this fountain was a solution to this problem. However, over the centuries, its functionality has diminished. Many visitors note that the fountain is often dry, leading to discussions about its preservation and whether it should be reconnected to the water network. Despite this, its historical and architectural value remains immense, making it a significant symbol of Blanes.
The possibility of moving the fountain to a more prominent or accessible location has been explored, but technical challenges related to its age and the corrosion of its stone components have made this unfeasible. Dismantling and reassembling such an ancient structure would risk irreparable damage. Therefore, the Gothic Fountain remains in its original setting, a silent witness to centuries of history, inviting visitors to appreciate its enduring beauty and the ingenuity of its creators.
Visitor Experience and Preservation Concerns
However, a recurring theme in reviews and discussions is the lack of running water. Visitors often express surprise and a sense of missed potential, as the fountain's primary function is no longer active. This has led to debates about its maintenance and preservation. Some feel that efforts should be made to restore its water flow to give it more purpose beyond being a historical relic, while others acknowledge the technical difficulties and the inherent value of its current state as a historical artifact.
Despite the dry state, the fountain remains an emblematic symbol of Blanes and a popular spot for photography and a brief historical immersion. It's often recommended as part of a broader exploration of the old town. The advice for future visitors is to manage expectations regarding the water flow and to focus on appreciating the fountain's detailed craftsmanship and its place in the town's rich history.
