What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Piugaz Climbing Gym Bilbao is a top-tier facility for experienced climbers, lauded for its challenging and varied routes. While the climbing itself is exceptional, some visitors note that the gym could benefit from better cleaning and ventilation. Despite these minor drawbacks, the gym's commitment to providing a serious and rewarding climbing experience makes it a highly recommended spot for dedicated climbers.
"One of the coolest gyms I've been to. Complete opposite of Sputnik, absolutely not for beginners/kids or bringing your date to, but really good to get a good hard session.
I would give it 5 stars if the ventilation was better, after 2 hours I felt my mouth was full of chalk. Also the holds are very dirty.
But, but, the route selection is a real treat. The walls are very tall, so the finishes are quite scary. Very good variety of wall angles. The route setting is savage: hard, fun, and with no sacrifice made to make any move safer. Sometimes it feels like you either do the move or you die :D
Overall, I had a really good experience"

"The Gym would be super nice if it wasn't extremely dirty
Good space, hope the owners will start cleaning both the floors and the holds more"

"Fantastic gym, home to some serious climbers. Extensive hardcore training options as well as some very varied interesting boulders.
Wife had a bit of a harder time - beginners will be challenged. Friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere.
They were in the middle of erecting a new tower in the middle of the space. Some have commented that €10 per day is a bit steep but they clearly heavily re-invest back into the gym.
Would have loved to spend more time there as our holiday visit was short, but if we are ever back in Bilbao we will definitely return!"

The Climbing Experience at Piugaz
The bouldering area is equally impressive, featuring a wide variety of holds and interesting problems. While the grading system might differ slightly from other gyms, it's generally considered accurate and demanding. The gym is a place where serious climbers gather, and the atmosphere reflects this dedication to the sport.
However, it's important to note that beginners might find Piugaz overwhelming. The challenging nature of the routes means it's not the ideal place for a first-time climbing experience. The gym is more about a hard, rewarding session for those who are already comfortable with the basics and looking to advance their climbing prowess.
Gym Environment and Amenities
The ventilation is another aspect that has drawn attention. Some climbers feel that after a couple of hours, the air can become thick with chalk, impacting the overall experience. While the gym is clearly reinvesting in its facilities, as evidenced by the mention of a new tower being erected, consistent cleaning and improved air circulation would greatly enhance visitor comfort.
Despite these points, the staff are generally described as friendly and the atmosphere as welcoming, especially for experienced climbers. The gym's commitment to providing a challenging and engaging climbing environment is evident, even if the upkeep of the space could be improved.
