"Ancient church, impressive bas-reliefs and stained-glass windows"

Olga S

"Solemn place."

Jay ar Cortez

"It was built in the 13th century, beyond the city walls, on the site of an ancient pre-Romanesque temple. It was the former monastery of the Testicular Men, which was expanded over the years, decades, and centuries.

The Men occupied the convent from its founding until the confiscation of church property by Mendizábal in 1836. In the following ten years, it was occupied by the Poor Clares of Oviedo. In 1848, it became the seat of the parish of San Nicolás de Bari.

In 1936, due to the Civil War, the church was violently occupied by Popular Front forces, who immediately proceeded to loot the objects of worship and burn the altarpieces and images. Important works of art were lost. Between 1957 and 1969, renovations were carried out that left the church as we know it today."
