Today was long (~18 miles) but all good. Now relaxing in Astorga, which in addition to housing a Palace of Gaudi and another cathedral, has a chocolate museum! Who knew? #caminodesantiago #caminofrances #astorga #lovechocolate

Reviews Summary

Astorga Cathedral is widely admired for its stunning architecture, a captivating blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, and its impressive museum. However, some visitors, particularly pilgrims, express strong reservations about the admission fees, viewing it as a commercialization of a sacred space. Despite this, the architectural grandeur and historical significance are undeniable draws.

"Wonderful! Such a beautiful cathedral. Also I was lucky to hear the organ live there before the mass."

Olga Novolotskaya

"I'm a Christian Catholic and I am a pilgrim on the Camino of Santiago. I honk it's a complete SHAME to make people pay to enter a church this is just a business nowadays and even Jesus condemned Thai behaviour. I am form Rome and I never payed even for St Peter so it's a complete shame to make me pay to enter the cathedral I don't care about the museum or the audio guide. People wanting to pray should always be allowed into church. Bad don't telle me that it's open 9-10 during mess because being a Pilgrim I just leave at 6-7 in the morning I cannot wait for your commodities. Total complete shame."

Marco Nigro

"The museum is very interesting and the cathedral is awesome, well worth the cost of admission. Photos are not permitted."

Pilgrim Perspectives on Astorga Cathedral

For many walking the Camino de Santiago, Astorga Cathedral is a significant landmark and a welcome sight. The sheer beauty and grandeur of the cathedral are often highlighted as a highlight of the journey, offering a moment of awe and reflection. Instagram+2

However, a recurring point of discussion among pilgrims on platforms like Reddit revolves around the admission fees. Some feel it's inappropriate to charge for entry into a place of worship, contrasting it with churches that offer free access and fund operations through optional museum tickets or donations. This sentiment is strongly voiced by those who see churches primarily as spaces for prayer and spiritual solace, not commercial ventures. Reddit+1

Despite these concerns, many still appreciate the cathedral's artistic and historical value, acknowledging that the ticket price often includes access to an interesting museum. The advice for pilgrims is to be prepared for the potential cost and to decide if the experience aligns with their personal values and budget for the Camino. Reddit
