"The pottery centre and ethnographic museum «Cha Domitila» is a small but nice museum in the beautiful and authentic village of Arguayo in the west of Tenerife. The museum shows the history and some artefacts of the Guanche pottery that is so typical of the Canary Islands. The exhibition has very interesting text panels in Spanish/English/German.
In the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, the village of Arguayo was known for its pottery production. Almost every family was involved. And Arguayo had another special feature: here it was mainly the women who were responsible for the production and (barter) trade.
The production of pottery in the Canary Islands goes back hundreds of years and is part of the Guanche culture.
What you will also find in this museum is a workshop where you can watch a potter at work. When this museum was founded, there were still a few women in Arguayo who mastered the craft and also traded in it. So they were just in time to keep the craft alive and pass on the knowledge by creating this little gem of a museum and workshop.
The museum is located in a small building that is so typical of the Canary Islands. The small rooms and the idyllic courtyard have been beautifully restored. The building had already fallen into disrepair. It used to be a house with a courtyard: a room to live and sleep (the current museum), a kitchen (now storage) and a space for animals (the current workshop)
A visit to this small museum certainly does not take long, maybe half an hour. It is therefore also very interesting for families with children.
When we visited this museum, there was no ticket office. But of course there is a possibility for a voluntary contribution. Give generously so that this special museum for Tenerife and its visitors can continue to exist."
