What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for San José y Santa Adela Cemetery are divided. While some visitors praise recent renovations and the availability of affordable flowers, others are highly critical of ongoing neglect, cleanliness issues, and limited parking. The opening hours are also a point of concern for many.
"Well, I just got back from there, and contrary to the recent reviews I've seen, I think it's been much cleaner and more well-maintained for a few years now. They're constantly renovating new areas, they've greatly improved the fountain area, added wastebaskets, and new stairs, and have refurbished and renovated some very old parts. They also have a flower van that sells flowers, offering a wide variety at good prices. I would point out two drawbacks: the parking is limited, it's very neglected and dirty, and unsupervised. The other drawback is the opening hours. At least in the summer, they should be open until 8 p.m. for less, and in the winter, until 7 p.m., because for people who work, it's hard to find a suitable time."

"The cemetery is very neglected, dirty, and has gates that could have been open or closed. That's what we pay taxes and fees for. Solutions now!"
CriticoAlmeriense
"I ALSO AGREE WITH JUAN MAÑAS, the neglect and lack of cleanliness is incredible, any cemetery in a small town is infinitely better."

Understanding the Cemetery's Condition
It's important for visitors to be aware of this duality. The cemetery is a place of remembrance and history, and while efforts are being made, the challenges of maintaining such a large and historic site are evident. The financial aspect also plays a role, with some visitors noting that they pay taxes and fees for upkeep, yet the conditions do not always reflect this investment. Despite these concerns, the presence of a flower van offering affordable tributes adds a practical and appreciated service for visitors.
Navigating Visitor Logistics
Another significant logistical challenge is the restrictive opening hours, particularly during the summer months. Many visitors find it difficult to access the cemetery after typical working hours, leading to suggestions for extended evening hours. This limitation means that a spontaneous visit might not always be feasible, and checking the exact opening times before you go is highly recommended. Comfortable footwear is also a must, as exploring the grounds involves considerable walking.
