"Great hiking areas can be easily put together via komot"

Michael Salbert

"A rock-carved Buddha from the Silla period of the Three Kingdoms Period, located on Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Treasure.

Designated a Treasure in 1963, this seated Buddha was carved into a chamber (a cave-like space or structure built to house a Buddha image) on the northern slope of Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju. The Buddha chamber, approximately 3 meters high and 3.8 meters wide, has a nearly triangular cross-section, measuring 1 meter deep and 1.42 meters high. This is the earliest example of a Buddha carved in high relief within a chamber in Korea. It is in excellent condition, except for some damage to the right shoulder and left knee.

"I took a car to go to Bulgok.
After entering the pine field from the road, parking, and walking up the gentle mountain path for about 15 minutes, you will come across a bamboo forest (where arrows were made in the past), which is evidence that there used to be a temple site.
You can also see the foundation stones. And if you climb up the paved stairs, you can see the Tabernacle Buddha between the bamboo paths on the right. It is said to be the Grandmother Buddha, but when the morning sunlight touches the face of the Buddha, which was carved into the rock with an intaglio and then again with a double carving, the appearance of a girl Buddha can be seen."

This rock-carved Buddha, designated a Treasure in 1963, represents a significant artistic and religious achievement of its era. It is the earliest known example in Korea of a Buddha image carved in high relief within a chamber, showcasing advanced sculptural techniques. The chamber itself, a cave-like structure, adds to the sacred atmosphere of the site. Reddit

The Buddha is carved into the northern slope of Namsan Mountain, a location often associated with spiritual practices and temple sites during the Silla dynasty. While technically a high-relief carving, the combination of intaglio and double carving, especially when illuminated by the morning sun, reveals a face that is often described as resembling a kind grandmother or a gentle young girl.
