Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Geunjeongjeon Hall as a highlight of Gyeongbokgung Palace, marveling at its grand architecture and historical significance. The affordability of entry, especially with free admission for Hanbok wearers, is a major draw. While the palace is extensive and can feel repetitive to some, the overall experience is highly regarded for its cultural immersion and photographic opportunities.

"Geunjeongjeon (근정전), the majestic throne hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace, is the crown jewel of Seoul’s Joseon-era heritage. As the centerpiece of Korea’s most iconic palace, this grand hall—with its double-tiered roof, intricate dancheong (colorful paintwork), and elevated stone platform—epitomizes royal authority and architectural brilliance. Built in 1395, it hosted coronations, state affairs, and diplomatic receptions. Today, visitors can marvel at the ornate throne under a ceiling adorned with golden dragons, while imagining the grandeur of past ceremonies. The surrounding courtyard, flanked by rows of rank stones (banyaekseok), adds to the imposing atmosphere. Time your visit for the 10 AM or 2 PM palace tours (or weekdays for fewer crowds) to fully appreciate its historical weight. At night, the illuminated hall becomes even more magical during special seasonal openings."

"Beautiful palace, you get in for free if you are wearing a Hanbok (traditional costume). The entrance fee is not expensive otherwise.
I recommend to wear a hanbok as everyone, tourists and locals, wear them. There are plenty of hanbok rental places next to the palace, if you are traveling around Seoul I would recommend a visit Seoul card, which gives you discount on the hanbok rental.
The palace is extensive and you could easily dedicate it two hours or more visiting it, even if after a while it becomes a little bit repetitive.
The guard ceremony is not worth watching, it’s long and is not as good as you would expect, even if the actors do their job well."

Diego Moreno

"This is the grand throne hall within Seoul's Gyeongbokgung Palace,.
This magnificent structure is often cited by visitors as a highlight of their palace tour, and for good reason. The sheer scale and intricate details of the traditional Korean architecture are breathtaking, offering a tangible connection to the Joseon Dynasty.
Aim to arrive at Gyeongbokgung when it first opens to avoid the biggest crowds, allowing you to appreciate the grandeur of Geunjeongjeon without too many people.
Remember that Geunjeongjeon is part of the larger palace complex, so factor in at least a couple of hours to explore everything Gyeongbokgung has to offer."
