Western islands
Baengnyeong-do is the farthest west and farthest north island in South Korea. Just 9 miles off the coast of North Korea, it is the site of massive military tensions, where a South Korean ship was sunk. And it is also one of the most beautiful islands in South Korea. I visited in 2020.

Reviews Summary
Baengnyeongdo Island offers a unique experience with its dramatic coastal scenery, wildlife spotting opportunities, and exceptional stargazing. Visitors appreciate the island's natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere, though the long ferry journey and military presence are notable aspects of the trip. It's considered a worthwhile destination for those seeking a remote and tranquil escape.
"Baengnyeong island is located in the end of northwesten South Korea. It is just next to North Korea, 12km away. South and North Korea are on a truce. So barbed wires are everywhere. There were some sea battles between them. Then you can not visit sometimes. That is why many army watchboxes take beautiful view points. But I can not feel anything dangerous. I enjoyed good natural resources such as hills with trails and lookout, mud or pebble beaches. But it is longway which took 5 hours from Inchen sea port by ferry."
