Day 2 in Wilderness and the Brown Hooded Kingfisher Trail was my absolute favourite. We were surrounded by towering hills and mountains draped with lush vegetation, walking through the overhangs of dense forest thicket. The highlight, of course, was taking the detour to the viewpoint where we enjoyed the most spectacular views over the forest canopy and listened to the deep, liquidy, haunting call...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Brown Hooded Kingfisher Trail as a hidden gem, highlighting its beautiful scenery, abundant shade, and the rewarding waterfall at the end. It's considered a well-maintained and accessible hike suitable for families and nature lovers, with excellent birdwatching opportunities. Some note the potential for slippery conditions after rain and the ambiguity around permit requirements.

"I found the info I got from reviews quite confusing. Here is my experience:
This specific location does start a hiking point. You have to cover some gravel road to get there. While the boards advise you to obtain a permit, there was no station to do so.
The hike is great, beautiful scenery and some streams. It ends at a waterfall.
It's just short of 2km out and you return on the same path.
It's not too hard but I think it can get more difficult in raining season. It shouldn't be impossible with little kids or for older folks. You can turn around at any point and head back.
The trail ends near a waterfall with plenty of rocks where you can sit and rest or snack.
Beautiful trail with loads of shade. Definitely worth it."

"A real hidden gem. And a must see if you are a nature lover! A not too strenuous walk of about 1.6km up to the spectacular little waterfall is well worth it. Find a rock and have a picnic. You can go about 400m further up the hill to the most breathtaking view over the indigenous forest and river below, but be warned - it is a really steep climb up there, a relatively well-defined level of fitness will get you up there eventually. If you can muster this, it is worth it! The trail is short, but not short on scenery. Highly recommended!"
