What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitor experiences at the Mossel Bay Shark Lab are varied. While some praise the conservation efforts and hands-on encounters with marine life, others express disappointment with the facility's condition and the limited variety of exhibits. The R40 entry fee is considered reasonable by many, but some feel it doesn't fully justify the experience.
"My children and I enjoyed learning about all the water animals. We appreciate people saving animals living in harsh conditions. Please visit and support this gem of a place. They would appreciate your support helping these animals. The more visitors the better they can help and support these water creatures."
Elmarie Rossouw
"Was disappointed with how much this little gem has gotten run down. Most tanks are empty, and those that have fish are in need of some serious TLC. The fake plants and gems thrown in tanks look cheap and nothing what it would look like in real rock pools (educational wise). Needs an urgent makeover. Feel I've wasted money @ R40pp (both children and adults) for a visit that only lasted 15min."
Nicolette Orffer
"My heart broke when I saw how terrible the conditions are for all the marine life at this aquarium. The shark tank is unbelievable small, dark and depressing. The guide also admitted that the shark’s mental state has deteriorated because it is actually a bottom feeder but frantically swims at the top of the tank all day long, which is completely abnormal behaviour.
I don’t like leaving bad reviews but I truly feel like this place should be shut down. Ever since leaving the aquarium I feel disturbed and truly heart sore for the fish that are held captive there for money."

Understanding the Mossel Bay Shark Lab's Mission
Visitors often highlight the hands-on experiences as a key draw, allowing for direct interaction with smaller sharks and other marine life. This approach fosters a deeper connection and understanding of these animals. However, it's important to note that the lab is a small-scale operation, and some reviews suggest that certain exhibits could benefit from refurbishment. The core mission, however, remains focused on animal welfare and public awareness.
Supporting the Mossel Bay Shark Lab means contributing directly to these conservation efforts. The revenue generated from admissions and donations is crucial for the ongoing care of the animals, providing them with necessary medical attention, food, and suitable habitats. It's a place where visitors can feel they are making a tangible difference.
Navigating Visitor Experiences and Reviews
Conversely, other reviews point to a deterioration in the facility's condition, with mentions of empty tanks, a lack of variety in marine life, and a need for 'serious TLC.' Some visitors felt the experience was a 'waste of money and time,' citing the small size of the shark tank and the overall unhygienic appearance. Concerns have also been raised about the welfare of the animals, with one review detailing abnormal behavior in a shark due to its unsuitable environment.
It's clear that managing expectations is key. Those who visit with the primary goal of supporting marine conservation and having a brief, educational encounter tend to have a more positive outlook. Visitors expecting a large, state-of-the-art aquarium may be disappointed. The advice from the community suggests going with an open heart to support the animals, rather than for a grand spectacle.
